Push yourself during each set until you are literally physically unable to complete another rep. If needed, reduce the time you spend on your sets when you get tired. If you want to gain muscle mass, you should be dead-lifting, bench-pressing and squatting. These three specific exercises yield maximum benefits fast and let you continue building good muscle. Although you can perform other exercises in your routine, these should be the ones you focus on. Some people have problems increasing all of their muscle groups at similar rates. Use fill sets to target your problem muscle groups. Target the particular muscle group with 25-30 reps of a specific exercise a few days after you last exercised that group. You can judge the effectiveness of a muscle building routine by its ability to make you stronger. You can tell if you are stronger by keeping track of the weights and reps you do each workout. For example, every second workout, you should be able to lift 5% more than the last time. If you have not been achieving your goals, then take a closer look to see if there is something you are doing wrong. Keep in mind that recovery time is also important though, so you won't see results if you don't give your body some time to rest. Be careful about which exercises you perform with heavier weights, because not all movements are designed to be done with extra bulk. Dips, neck work and split squats can involve unfavorable joint positions where you really risk serious injury. Instead, use heavier weights primarily for exercises such as rows, presses, deadlifts and squats. Do squats the smart way. The bar should rest across your back near the center of your trapezoidal muscles. This balances out the concentration of muscle, and it allows you to squat additional weight that would be impossible otherwise. If your workout goal is to build muscles, you should eat only foods that are fresh and wholesome. Don't eat foods loaded with preservatives or fillers, which are bad for your immune system. Eating a healthful diet has benefits beyond contributing to increasing your muscle mass. Mix up your grip to build back muscles. To get more strength, use a mixed or staged grip when doing deadlifts and rack pulls. Meanwhile, staggering your grip also gives you directional control from both the top and bottom of the bar. This will keep the bar from sliding over your hands.
