GW Guild Wars FAQ

Does Guild Wars feature a monthly fee?
No, it does not. After purchasing Guild Wars, you will be able to play online without paying any fee whatsoever.

Is Guild Wars played through peer to peer or on ArenaNet servers?
Everything is hosted upon the ArenaNet servers, nothing is peer to peer; it uses the same online system found in every MMO.

Can I use more than one profession at a time?
Yes, each character can have up to two professions, dual classing. Your primary profession determines the appearance of your character as well as other information (please refer to “professions”).

Is there a greater focus on player versus player or player versus monster?
Neither has a greater focus, each is equally polished and developed. Players can play either one and will benefit from a great gaming experience. Some may be more inclined to play one type over another, but both are equal in quality.

How many players can play in one single instance?
The most we’ve seen to date is 64; but there is no technological reasons not allowing more characters within a mission; merely balancing issues. In theory, we could see much larger battles at a later point assuming the development team believes it would add an additional aspect to the gameplay without making it too chaotic.

What is dyeing?
Dye is used to change the overall color of armor and weapons, applying a red bottle of dye upon a piece of armor will render it mostly red (while still keeping the general tone of the original armor).

How many skills can I bring with me into battle?
The maximum amount of skills which can be brought into battle is of 8 and they cannot be changed until the character has returned to an outpost or town.

Does dieing relay permanent effects?
No, dieing will only reduce the character’s health and energy for the duration of the mission/battle; it may be reduced if the character defeats other foes.

Can armor be dropped from a fallen creature?
No, armor cannot be obtained from fallen creatures, it can only be acquired through crafting. Crafting requires crafting materials and gold.

Does Guild Wars feature any sort of cinematics/cutscenes?
Yes, quite a few cutscenes can be viewed, mostly following the completion of a quest.

Which is the most powerful profession?
There is no ‘one’ profession, as each can be countered by another. Certain professions paired with certain skills can defeat any profession using any set of skills; it is the player’s job to determine those essential strategies.

Does the server go down very often?
Being alpha testers for quite some time now, we have yet to see it go down. To our knowledge, it has been running 24/7 without any downtime (except for one instance of server maintenance months ago. To my understanding, the server will rarely go down, if ever.).

Is it difficult?
Yes, it can be rather difficult as there is a need for quite advanced strategies in certain instances. Players should welcome the challenge, as it sure is a change to the cookie cutter games that have been released over the past few years. Guild Wars favors intelligence over reaction time (although, it still can be rather useful in certain situations)
