Every class has unique wardrobe selections that may be picked at creation and distinguish them from the others.

Using transmutation stones and an un-patched game glitch, you're currently able to fool everyone and make your character appear to be a class it's not.

Here's a walk-through on how to do this using a Thief and an Engineer, although you can accomplish this on any two classes wearing the same type of armor. (i.e. Light/Medium/Heavy)

Example Goal: I want to give my Engineer a Thief hood.

1) Create a new Thief and select the desired hood.
2) Play through the first newbie quest.
3) Purchase a Rawhide Mask. (~1s on the trading post)
4) Use a Basic Transmutation Stone.
5) Combine the appearance of the Thief Mask with the stats of the Rawhide Mask.
(See the video below if you need help on how to use Transmutation Stones.)
6) Place the newly created item in the bank.
(The new item will say that it's soulbound, but don't worry.)
7) Log on with your Engineer and take the soulbound item out of the bank.
(That's the bug -- you shouldn't be able to do this, but you currently can.)
8) Transmute as many additional items as you want to have this appearance.

Notes:
  • This would also work the other way around, if you wanted to give the Thief a pair of Engineer goggles.
  • This also works between other classes that use the same type of armor, so you could have a Necromancer wearing a Mesmer mask since they both wear light armor.
  • You get 3 Basic Transmutation Stones for free every time you complete a map. (All POI's, Vista's, etc.)
  • You'll need to use Fine Transmuation Stones if you want your level 80 helm to have the unique appearance. The Basic version only works on level 79 and lower equipment.
Here's an example of how super-stealthy your grenade engineer may become if you give them a thief mask...
