Actually you can change your name, you can change anything about your character.

You can change your name to anything you want, you can change your race/sex and you can even run around butt naked if you know how to use and edit with the model viewer.

Now here is the catch, you are only changing these things with in your own system so therefore everyone else will still see you and your name as it was when you created your character.

You can change your name, but you have to have a good reason. I had a friend with a character named "Poon". He had the name for the longest time, then one day someone called a GM on his name. The GM told him he would need to choose a new name there on the spot. Whats funny tho, is after he changed his name, the GM asked where he would like to be returned, and he replied "the zone I came from". He was placed right in the middle of the Ro Maeve and promptly got agro and died lol.

Anyways, if you tell the GM that your character name bothers you maybe you can have it changed. Maybe make up some sob story about how the name was like a pet name, and the pet died (doesnt work so well with names like Smashaxe or some crap lol). Or maybe you could have a friend make a GM call on your name, saying that its some slang for some disgusting sex act. Be creative

Thats Funny This Topic Just Came Up Cause We Have Found A way But You Need more Then 1 person To Confirm it before it becomes CONFIRMED! Give a few days if not less And It should Get Confirmed In Premium

-Delete your character
-Create a new character with the same name as the old one
-Go into POL GM chat, wait to connect, character restore the old character (has to be within last 90 days of delete)

When its restored, and you try to logon your old character it will say the name is already taken(by your mule), and you will have to chose a new one.

Done.

This is one of the best way.

no i dont want to do it that way anymore. is there a way to just change it on my computer? and .dat files i can modify to change my name?

Doable but would require memory editing as the name is fetched from the server.
If you REALLY want this then I suggest you do research in that area. (imho it's a horrendous waste of time)

The best way of changing your name is to wait for the monthly billing and let it fail (don't have money on your bank account or something). Then have a second account / friend create a new character with the name you want to replace, once you reactivate your own account you'll be asked to change your name.
This actually happened to a member of my ls this month, billing failed and when she reactivated 3 hours later someone had taken the name, was a very nice short 3 letter one too.

You go about doing it by spending some time learning the basics.

This doesn't allways work. It worked during last registration server maintenance indeed, but something went quite wrong with the maintenance itself.

May or not work over next/other registration server maintenance periods, but out of that period what you will get is "The selected name is not available" message.
