video capture?

Just wondering who uses video capture here and what program they use? I have a couple professional programs that I borrowed (

) from work. Mostly made through AVID though. The program is resource hungry and even with 2GB/DDR500 on P4 @ 3.4GHz I notice a pretty good slow down when videos get over a minute or two long. Mainly due to the memory and pagefile being killed under loads. They work awesome without FFXI running though -- just too much memory used between the two. Actually AVID likes to try to take as much as it can even if it hurts other running programs
Anyone tried FRAPS for videos? I use it for screenshots but only the trial version. I tried out FRAPS under the free version and wasn't impressed much but it was only 30 seconds long and had those watermarks. Don't want to shell out $35 if it sucks. Has anyone used it for videos longer than a couple minutes? preferably about 10 since we want to make a couple tutorial videos for our LS website lol.

I have used a (limewire downloaded...) full version of fraps to capture videos up to about 30 mins long.
To be honest, I didn't notice any great difference in speed etc after, say, 15 mins, than after 5 secs.
It killed my frame rate down to about 7 fps, but my computer sucks (ffxi strains it anyway...) really bad.
If you have 2 hard disks, fraps is fine normally. I think it seems to work your disk pretty hard, and if thats the same disk that windows and ffxi are running off, there are gonna be problems (i only have 512mb ram and a 2ghz processor etc)

thanks for the insight ^^
I was able to find a fraps registered version on Shareaza last night. Its an older version from what I can tell when looking at the current fraps download page. Its v 2.5.5 and they are on v2.7.2. Seemed to work ok but glitchy with the audio at times. Going to try to find another version using one of the many other download stuffs out there tonight ^^
running full screen @ 60fps used up almost 2GB in 5 minutes of just running around jueno. tried to test it out in a laggy place and seemed to do pretty well. video quality not as good as actual game play but then again, its not made to be pretty

just teach the new people in the LS how to do certain things (tutorial videos lol). maybe a new version is better ... guess its back to searching the torrent forums again
I have my files being saved to a storage drive right now -- kind of cheap 7200rpm 80GB but no clue what kind. Main drives are 2x 74GB 10,000 rpm raptors running in raid 0. ^^

Yeah, your computer seems to be way better than mine.
Not much point recording at 60 fps imo. Theres an option to set the framerate to half the amount being displayed on the screen - I recommend it.
File size is always huge with fraps, cos it saves them totally uncompressed. I use VirtualDub to compress them myself, but theres better stuff out there.

I've since dropped my frame rate down to 30 and half size. The people I work in the same building with are broadcasters and I usually find myself fixing their PC's and equipment. I got a copy of the AVID software (nice expensive stuff lol) but I can't stand the CPU resources it uses up

All the computers they use at work for editing and either linux based or Mac's. Windows + AVID editors don't mix well lol. Gonna check out a couple compressors when I get home from work.
Thanks again
