How to start developing a plugin/chatlog parser?

I want to enable XUnleashed chatlog parsing for SWG, do I need to develop a plugin to do this and generate event triggers for XU?

Also I see that there is a packet sniffer module for XU. Can I get some details on how to utilize this? I know that SWG is using a standard compression on the packets so they will need to be decompressed before they are inspected.

I found the plug in sample for creating a clock, and I'll start there, but what other resources should I be looking at? Is this the right approach to extending XU for SWG?
