is it possible to run this game well off of a 56k, or do I need something faster?

i would have to say no... i know people who actually switched from dsl to cable cause it was unplayable. they would lag badly run into aggressive creatures and die or lag while hitting a mob and die. if dsl is no good for the game i would definitely not suggest 56k.

playing L2 with a 56k connection will not be enjoyable.

I've played it with 56k many times. Just have to turn the setting lower detail on and it works fine.
