Is there any possibility to reduce pc resources consumption?

Coz when i run L2 in background, my pc goes back to the glorious days of 80386 cpu's... My system has 2x256 dual ddr ram and athlon 1800+ cpu, running WinXP pro. Is there any posibility to run game in non-fullscreen mode or smth?
