Was there a purge of anykind on eq1?

My old guild is thinking about re activating a bunch of really old accounts for eq1.
There seems to be alot of confusion on what has happened to accounts that have been in active for 5 years or so
I'm hearing that all gear was purged and stuff like that.
Any help on sheding some light on this would be great.
