I despise AOL and that was the first thing I saw when going to aim.com. Is this thing safe? I mean AOL is far far from being secure can I get AIM and not have to worry about built in back doors and crap like that? I have used MS version of this but just not sure about AIM... Any thoughts?

Yes, it's safe. There is *some* spyware if you decide to use their interactive games though (from third party game distributers). Simply don't use the games or don't use the default AIM client. There's a lot of software that uses the AIM protocol. For example, the HarvestBot uses the protocol directly using the AIM plugin. When I'm personally using AIM for my own use, I use Trillian.
