is there a way to link an item you dont have

In EQ1 i use to use this program that i could type /tell (cant remember the name)bot. and i could get a link of any item known by this out of game bot program. Items that i didnt have but could get links to show other people the any item in the game.. I have someone in my guild that can do this but its not being released by him on how he is doing it.
