There are some quests (like the Polished Granite Tomahawk heritage) that require you to find an item by harvesting but for which you only get an update to your quest and no actual item. (In the PGT quest you don't actually get 10 pieces of granite just a quest update saying you got the piece.) While harvesting for this quest I found very few windswept stones, which are the node that must be harvested.

When harvesting I always double click the node to harvest and I have noticed that if you double click quickly on the last harvest right as the bar fills up it will began harvesting again, even though the node has disappeared. When the bar fills up it usually just says "You cannot harvest this." (or something like that) However, it will still roll for quest update. Twice while harvesting for PGT I did this and got the message "Cannot harvest" then DING, you found a quest item. Essentially, its 33% more rolls for quest update in same amount of time. Not great, but worth doing.

I believe you are misteken. For PGT there was a specific harvest needed to get the quest ding. When you get your harvest to start going again after the node has been depleted you can not get any more harvests or quest credit. If you see a ding after this it's just because eq2 was catching up to you by telling you all sorts of information... "You have mined a [blank]"; "You have gotten beter at mining [###]" etc. The ding occurs when you get the quest credit message, which comes right after it shows you what you harvested. The fact that you saw the ding after the node was gone was a coincidence.

the best way to do this is que the spell, say your mining, que it, and it will mine an empty node when it is gone

I just di this last night, there is NOT a specific harvest needed for PGT quest updates. Even if it says "You found nothing" it may give you a quest update. And when harvesting the non-existant node on an enqued harvest I was watching the quest helper which was not lagging and it showed a quest update.
