I have found that iron is on a 2 min respawn timer, normally in 2-4 places. Best start place is just inside the shire where it spawns in the bucket load. I shall post more when I get the time. But if you find areas you can travel between that lasts 2 mins you can mine loads of iron.

What do you mean by no longer working? Did the respawn time go up?
