No, Illidan is a dungeon BOSS. He cannot be killed by himself because he releases his minions on you and they themselves are level 70+. Illidan cannot be used as a pet since he is a BOSS. So, your friend is lying to you.

lucifron, the first boss in MC, cant be killed solo. just as a reference point..
