What happened there?

Nothing much, that was the first Beta Event. Beta Events are little games and contests that the staff organize to let the players test new game additions. This was waaay back in the day, and I think was the end of the beta event for PC Users. Not sure.

There was an invitation to another Beta Event recently for the XBox users.

That was the Beta event for PS2 & PC users.
It happened through June(?)-October '03. Then in October '03 FFXI came out in North America for the PC.. and later for the PS2 in April '04.
