if you want to know if an NPC or a certain mob or maybe even another player(havent tryed the player) is near you simple type any /emote and use thier name WITHOUT haveing anything targeted.
for example... /wave Mariner Foot Soldier
however this isnt perfect. Sometimes you /wave something else instead. I find that it only works for the first word in the name. (which kinda sux cause alot of mobs are named something like "a firerock giant" and the first word is "a")
