fafnir/nidhogg guide : FFXI Submissions

Fafnir/nidhogg can be extremely difficult or extremely easy to defeat depending on strategy. I will post some useful information and some tips and suggestions on strategy. We should discuss this and pool together our knowledge to develop the most efficient way to defeat him.

Positioning:

1. Breath Attack - The most important thing is positioning. What works best is tanks stand on his feet and mages and melee stand directly behind the tanks. His breath attack is cone shaped, so the further you stand back the more dmg you will take. The breath attack can one-shot anyone, mage, melee, or even a tank. Some people say melee can stand to his side. But considering his breath attack is cone shaped this could be tricky. One mistake in their positioning and they will take huge amounts dmg or even die.

2. Flail Spike - Once again positioning is everything. NEVER ever stand behind Fafnir or anywhere near the rear of him. This means THF can only TA on the tank and not use SA at all. If someone gets hate from behind Fafnir he will use Flail Spike and totally destroy the alliance. Unfortunately this also seems to be the best way to MPK someone fighting Fafnir, so a dishonorable LS may try and spam cure on the tank from behind Fafnir causing us to wipe.

MP Recovery:

This fight can drain mages on MP fast so having a MP recovery plan is important. Never ever use TOD spells on Fafnir. This is because it may become necessary to sleep him so that the alliance can recover MP and mages can catch up on healing. Fafnir can be slept fairly easily; however the biggest threat of doing so is someone stealing the claim. What works best is to cast non-DOT spells such as debuffs on him and for pld to alternate voking when he is asleep. This will prevent Fafnir from going unclaimed so that a LS can steal him.

Tanking:

NIN can tank Fafnir and it has been done before, however PLD is the most efficient tank for Fafnir for several reasons. Tanking with staff does work but considering this fight is all about hate control, PLD should tank with sword/shield. There should be a minimum of 3 PLD to tank Fafnir. 2 tanks are in same tank party and share hate as much as possible and this is why: Fafnir likes to spam terrorize, so each PLD should make a terrorize macro to inform the off-tank to take over tanking. The 2 PLD switch back and forth regularly when they become terrorized. If a PLD drops they should be kicked and backup tank invited in their place. However the backup tank will have a hard time getting hate, so the best solution is to not let the tank die ever under any circumstances.

Damage Dealers:

Since this battle is all about hate control dmg dealers need to be careful to not get hate. Hate will build over time sense this is a long battle (especially on Nidhogg). A common BLM strategy is to nuke as much as possible without getting hate, then log off and log back in to reset hate. This means there needs to be a party leader that is familiar with using the "/pcmd add" command. Blink is pretty much useless in this fight so some people say that rng should sub whm for Stoneskin; however I don’t think it is really that necessary. Also WHM can alternate being primary healer while the other rests for MP and or log out to reset hate.

The conical breath parameters are really just superstition, but may as well run with them. That being said, it'd be 'safe' to have all melees/mages in the yellow box, while being wary of being too far back. It's best to keep them on the side, near his frontal leg.



I find the most troublesome aspect of the battle to be Hurricane Wing. It causes quite a nice chunk of damage, so healing magic hate can be a problem. This is where SMN comes in. SMN is arguably one of the best classes for fafnir for one reason: Spring Water. If anyone says 'Earthen Ward' I'll slap them. There's no reason for it. Logic:

Spring Water 'cures' (Hatelessly) 47HP+3xLvl HP (272HP @lv75) AND removes the pesky Blind.

Earthen Ward 'cures' (As in, prevents, irrelevant) 50HP+2xLvl HP (200HP @Lv75) and doesn't prevent a status ailment.

Spring Water costs 7 more MP. But.. heals 72 more HP and removes blind. As you can see, it's obviously a superior choice. Making it MORE EFFECTIVE is the idea that some melees (RNGs) may be /WHM for stoneskin, which would negate Earthen Ward's usefulness.

this really isnt that good of a guide. and yes you can sneak attack on fafnir and not make it spike flail, all you have to do is make sure pld have alot of hate, then go behind and do whatever to cause major dammage but not enough to turn him, and then log off and log back on and all hate is reset. the breath attack wont 1 shot mages, only taru smn who have serkets and astrals. breat attack does about 700 dammage so most mages (besides taru) dont have to worry about this. and the smn part with the spring water. sometimes its better to have stonesking (because if you get hit by fafnir and you take 0 dammage then you casting wont be inturupted, this dosnt happen often but this can be a crucial spell thats being casted like cure V. and another problem, rdm or whm should not cast cure IV alot. cure IV gives alot of hate so you should stick to spamming cure III and cure V to make sure you dont take hate from pld, because if you do use cure IV you will take hate fairly esiely from faf. and rng should not go /whm. hurricane wing will go through their stoneskin in 1 shot and they will still take dammage, they will have enough mp if they are lucky to cast around 3 or 2 before they have to rest and unless they have a rdm using refresh they will have to rest for mp. just take rng sub and let a rdm or whm heal the party which isnt that much of a troublesome task.

ouryu is easy, just get 3 blm a brd or rdm and 2 random jobs, i did this mission as a drk and i just sat there and stuned him when he woke and mismelted him when he got into the air. as for the 3 blm, get some1 to dispel oryou's stonestkine cause he casts that as soon as he aggros, get the 3 blm to freeze at the same time then sleep then 3 freezes then sleep then manafont 3 freezes and he down. was one of the esiest battles iv done so far on cop.

I did with Pld, 2X Rng (pre-patch), RDM,SMN,BLM. Was quite a hard battle but we won anyway. (We died once, but the 2nd round, we used all our 2hr and won.

All of you guys crack me up. First off its 2 dollars a month just pay the 2

per month I hope you can afford it. Another thing Everyone that is a

premium member must have some grudge about everyone that comes up

with a new idea or guide on how to do something, because everytime I

see someone write something all of you premium people bash it and say it

sux, Are you jelouse that someone took there time out to make

something that might actualy help others and might actualy get a 2 dollar

a month membership for free or something? All Im saying is ive seen lots

of good ideas come though here in the months that ive been a member,

and out of all the Stratagies or anything else that ive read , I think you

I pay for this site, and yet I am constantly giving out information. I help out as much as I can and I don't ask for any extended service or anything like that.

When I see people trying to get in this site by posting information that is readily available on the net or can easily be found on pretty much ANY FFXI site I will shoot them down.

THIS IS A EXPLOIT WEBSITE, if I wanted a guide on beating COP Mission 2.5 or beating killing every Boss in Molten Core I would go to GameFAQ's, Allakhazam, IGN, etc... those guides are free and available. If I want some info on some secret exploit that a couple people have been using, I will come here.

The majority of the guides that I have seen come across on "Tault" have basically been copied off the internet and put on here and yet people still say "WoW kewl dood yay" because they have not seen that guide before.

THERE IS A DAMN GUIDE FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN FFXI NOW they are all available on any free MMORPG site.

If there is something here ever useful but yet unique posted, then it will get my "yay" as the Admin will say. However, known information, copied information, and pure crap will always get a NO from me and I will always state a real reason why.
