Retail Question re: payment : Lineage 2 General Discussions

If i were to simply buy one of those "time cards" ( or whatever they called ) do i still need to purchase the actual game for the $50 someodd dollars?
cause id rather spend the money on those cards and get 3 months worth instead of having to spend it on 1 free month which it doesnt even let you use until you buy atleast one more month.
