FFXI LAN server. is it possible? : FFXI General Discussions

i wonder if they every think that the Japanese actually write code in wait.. japanese ZOMG, maybe i should decrypt the packets from japanese to english... LOL i'm just kidding, takes time to decrypt, did it in highschool alot with small programs, and that was HARD, just imagine what pXI have to do... WHEW!

There was a private server once, but it's down now i think.

I was thinking the other day, what if it was possible to create your own LAN server for FFXI, for item/stat testing and maybe try to raise lv caps and such ^^. this has been done in WoW and other MMORPGs so I thought: "Why not FFXI too?"
then my friend told me this would be quite tricky, if not impossible, since PlayOnline apparently does something to prevent this... which is hard to get around...

anyone know if it can be done? can you moderate your own FFXI server to do whatever you want? I have some things I want to test, before I spend 100s of hours on it, in case I get dissapointed ^^;

there is a couple of running functioning servers in Russia. I am a member of one as of about 2 days ago, but have yet to actually get time to play on it yet. Just got my confirmation email back with a login/pass for it.

there are some private server projects out there. some stuck in diffrent places. projectxi has been stuck on the encryption forever

could you please tell us more about this? where it can be found etc.^^ It'd be cool if we could get a hold of any info of this such as how the decrypting was done, so ppl can make their own servers, and try stuff out. I for one need to know if there's a point in doing some stuff, and I'm also interested in what the stats for a lv100/50 char are. stuff like that... or just mess around with friends, while you're not playing the original
