I make about 50k/hour crafting parchment on my mule. I use a ACTool bot that I modified and added a auto-runner to. It can go for about 1-2 days before it stops (only because my mule runs out of money)

I usually leave it on at night and make 300-500k.

Im a crafter.. i've pulled 20m profit in an hour with synths that cost less than 100k to do. When I did overnight... I fished... I found a secret moneymaker pulling about 600k a night.

Crafts do pay off, the problem is that people have a "holy grial" approach to them.

But after my third 100+3 plus neccesary subcrafts for the trade in my little army I can say is a really good source of income.

And if chosen wisely it frees you from going mental trying to find someone with the neccesary skills to craft certain items for you.

If you take it with patience (and I'm afraid that there's no other possible approach, pwling a craft won't pay... you will just miss the point completely, get pissed off and quit the game) you will a) make profit b) make "contacts".

You will meet craftsmen like you who you can trust with platinum ingots, damascus ingots, angel skins, and any other hi-ticket ingredients to craft a certain piece of equipment you don't have the neccessary trade to make yourself without having to set an incredibly complicated deal to prevent being mugged.

Just don't choose Goldsmithing as your first craft when your main char is BLM 20. That's just plain stupid.

If you start lvling a craft whose key ingredients you can't farm or buy from regional merchants/standard merchants (if you depend on guild merchants you're doomed, every single key ingredient sold from guild is systematically bought and sold in AH for 20 times it's price, and you won't "outpull" these people, trust me.). Go play Neverwinter Nights.

An illustrating example:

Sole Sushi

Earth Crystal 1-2k/Stack
Black Sole 32k-35k/Stack
Tarutaru Rice 9-12k/Stack
Rice Vinegar 1.8k/Stack
Ground Wasabi 24-27k/Stack

Yields:2

@100+3 cooking you HQ about 1/12 synths and you fail on the same ratio.

Sells for 47-49k stack (with the occasional drop in prices due to some tw@ powerleveling cooking)

Assuming you buy all in AH for the lowest prices you invest 68k for something that is going to yield rougly 87k discounting AH tax. And about every 70 synths you'll get an stack of +1 that goes for 200k.

Conclusion: Sole Sushi is only profitable in terms of time vs gil if you can fish your own black sole (don't bother growing tarutaru rice, if you are about to take the annoying road of gardening try a more profitable recipe).

Edit: Concerning n00b craftsment and experienced "pros".

[PRO] {Hello!} I have the ingredients for SH, can you synth it for me?
[n00b] (me) Of course, is 1m the synth or 15m if I HQ it.
[PRO] Whaaat? I'm providing the ingredients! ***Insert here the insult/rude comment of your choice***!
[n00b (me)] I couldn't care less, get yourself sorted in the AH and stop wasting my time.
/blacklist "pro"

[PRO] {Hello!} I have the ingredients to make sushi/shihei/arrows/***Insert the consumable of your choice here*** Can you craft/cook it for me?
[n00b (me)] The AH is right behind me, get yourself sorted there and stop wasting my time.
/blacklist "pro"

AFAIC the "pro"'s can jump on the van of the gilsellers as much as they want, and monopolize Argus, Roc, Aquarius or overdig Yuhtunga Jungle till they fall exhausted to sell their loot for outrageous prices 24/7.

And they also can starve and run unprotected and naked as well if they don't buy finished products from n00b crafstmen. And pay for it.

I don't hire my crafts to "pro"'s. Only to fellow n00b craftsmen.

Ok ive read other gill making guides and they all have way lower numbers then in Alexander.
Such as the emperors hairpin. i read that it is only sold for 280k gil.
in my server it goes for 800k.
and the the leaping lizzy boots go for 900k in mine as well.

a problem with these nm items though is the fact that there are always gil sellers hunting them and warding off all people who play the game for fun :(
If one of u gil sellers sees this and gets pissed off i have only this to say.

Get a real job u lazy MF

not really ... i think , because now it's available in BCNMs, thus there MIGHT be a short term deflation, and Leaping boots is rumored to be sure drop @@;. i am unsure of the sure drop thing tho. IF it's sure drop, get ready to buy leaping with 10k.

that is suicidal, however the amount of money gained is greater than the amount of exp lost (if you do it right) WHM w/ reraise can make it farther than most....
i think i'll plan a few mining trips

Its not that hard, with patience you can mine in Ifrit's Cauldron at as low as level 20 with WHM20/NIN10 or RDM20/NIN10. Just keep the sneak on constantly and use Tonko: Ichi when you have to stay invisible without being detected by magic. Assuming you do check the immediate area for mobs around the mining point, you can last hours and hours in ifrits quite easily.
