Do you honestly believe that they manually found and banned/suspended 2000 accounts? This is a major gaming company. They have better stuff to spend their time on, and certainly can do things more proficiently than have GMs make a big tally. Most likely they have a little trigger on their server that will add you to a list of people who have teleported or moved to quickly in a short period, perhaps a client-side trigger for things like allwait0, or even windower. If the FFXi window is out of focus, if you buy two items from the AH in quick succession, bam you're on the list.
They probably got a nice big list and said, OK, lets ban 10% of these idiots to scare off the other ones. They effectively wipe out a large percentage of hackers while only losing about 2.5% (assuming that half only were suspended, and half of the banned people buy the game again), of their revenue from the h4x0rs.
Anyways, they CAN and probably DO actively check for noob hackers. This also explains why only some people got caught. For instance, my friend hasn't hacked for months and he got the ban stick. Unless he's not telling me something, that means that they've been scanning for months, obviously.
