Heh... Not exactly an active member but here's a snippet of my CoH AT guide that I've been writing.
The Defender
The Defender Archetype offers a HUGE variety of ways to play. There's the Healing/Mez resist, the -toHit immobilize, the +spd +dmg, the +recovery -res, the list could go on and on. Your primary set is going to be your healing/buff/debuff while you're secondary is a blaster set. With proper slotting you will be considered a sub blaster and can solo easier your early levels. The build I will show you is the resistance debuff and energy blast set. This set drove me nuts the first time I tried it but after some research I was able to figure it out.

As you can see, there were no heals or rez's taken until the teens. This is due to the fact that as a “Dark” defender you will be an outcast. When most people think of defenders they think of healers, they think of RA and RA Other. They don't think of the debuffing qualities and sheer destructive power that the defender can actually wield. My main character is a level 50 dark/dark/dark (Dark Miasma, Dark Blast, Dark Mastery) my main objective is to get as many bosses held as possible, get everyone clumped together with Tenebrous Tentacles, hop in the middle popping off Soul Drain and then finishing them off with Blackstar. If there are any left pop one blue hit Dark Consumption and finish them off with a few minor blasts. The main difference you'll come across when faced with choosing an empath over any other power set is this: Empathy is a full time job, you have no room in your schedule to really solo your own missions, when teaming and you're level 12 with two attack and no Fortitude you will start being ridiculed and sneered at because everyone believes that Empathy has no room for attacks. And it really can be an overwhelming job.
