In an interesting article covering EVE TV and the Jalipo "pay to view" model, a CB Games magazine reporter makes the following statement:

"But the most interesting thing about the show has to be that, according to mmogchart.com, EVE Online is actually one of the least popular MMORPGs around with CCP, EVE's developer/publisher, estimating over 170,000 active members. While that number appears to be growing steadily, compare it to the massively multiplayer monolith that is World of Warcraft."

This isn't an exception, rather it is the norm of quite a few in the media who consistently compare other MMOG subscription numbers to the anomoly. While Blizzard's World of Warcraft is an excellent subject to look at and compare to with regards to release, performance, stability, UI and userfriendliness and aspects of game mechanics, I feel that it is an unrealistic and invalid assessment to use their subscription numbers as the bar to measure all other games.

This article is a perfect example. EVE, as of early June 2007, is at over 200,000 subscribers. That puts "one of the least popular MMORPGs" as one of the largest MMOGs in the entire NA/EU market.

My rant aside, read the full CB Games article here.
