I dont have any tips or anything but i just wanted to say that i've heard from friends thats its a living hell to lvl Tailoring, apparently you wont be able to sell anything you do to other players, and have to sell everything to vendors.
Untill higher skill levels ofc.

Tailoring is useless anyway :)
For what you pay to skill it you can buy close to an infinite amount of Bags.

You can make bags, cloth armor, hoods, shirts, shoes, pants, robes, padded armor, leather armor, studded armor and bone armor with tailoring.

Anyone have an easy way to obtain cloth other than buying it at ridiculously high prices from the merchant?

If you're human the Sarlid Guards just West of Hildershaw drop 1 or 2 pieces of cloth almost every time.
