Turtles make good tanks for AC, as do scorpions.
Gorillas aren't bad tanks because of their new AoE taunt ability
Raptors, boars, and crabs are pretty good tank/dps combos
Bird's have nice DPS, but low armor
Cats have high Attack speed and DPS but only medium armor

In PvP, a flamingo is a great pursuit pet in lvl 19 BG. Instead of camping a rare fast pet, why not get a very common flamingo and use that? Cat's get prowl now, and that makes them nice pets in PvP, but only at higher lvls (30 or 40 plus? Can't remember)
If you want to stand out, find a lower level pet with medium stats (these usually aren't high value targets to most hunters) If you want to solo a lot with your pet, I'de put a few talents (7) into beast mastery. 20% Extra health, 30% extra armor looks pretty nice when your soloing an elite. The best flat out tank for survival, is deffinately the turtle. You've got the hide in shell fall-back ability, incase things go sour.
I think Tekk the Leaper looks nice on a person wearing full blackened defias armor. Black raptor, black armor, what could be better? (This is for looks, not fighting lol)
It's all up to you. Just don't get a crocilisk, people get annoyed and flame on you when your in a city, because it makes constant noise.
