they probaly just traced the IP adress he loged in most on... or his IP he emailed them from its not hard to get an IP tracer. I dont have one but you can get oen.

that guy does need help whether or not he was joking about all that

hoenstly i dont think him telilng them what "programs" to use will help with anyting. It doesnt take that much effort to google a few things to find programs, and im sure they pay someone to look for programs, download them study them and make code to find them....

Technically you didnt hack anything. You found out the password by other means other than brute force/backdoor.
