1 pet, but you can get more to put them in your stable and learn their claw, bite ect.. there is a hunter site around here. Try looking for that.

Check out petopia

http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/

It gives a huge list of hunter resources. Shows top 50 pet choices, pet families, all pet models, skills list, etc etc. Great site.
I love cats and turtles. That's just me. Your play style determines what pet you get. Solo should use a tanking pet, PvP and PvE in a group uses an offensive pet. It's hard to describe "The Best" pet. There really isn't one "Uber 1337" pet. Regardless of attack speed, blizzard is working on changes for customizable pets. IE AS, Attack, etc... so it won't matter in a few more months. Sigh. Hopefully it wont

Turtles AND Crabs are both good in PvE, but as TANKS. A DPS Class is better ine group PvE or PvP. High health is good if you use talents to increase hp, as higher base HP = Higher total. Gorilla's are nice in PvE and PvP with the AoE they get. It's all based on personnal pref. Go by what you like, although pets that have only bite and class specific abilities (Excluding growl/cower) usually conserve focus better. Claw isn't bad, but it takes managment or the pets dps are wasted. Get an addon that controls your pets focus and manages it to use it for max dps. Google it, I can't remember the name. Bite is always priority, growl second, claw third. OR Racial ability (pets, not yours lol), bite, claw, growl. Racials tend to hold agro better except in turtles case.
