Race Currency, Gold Standard & Exchange Rates
By Xanavi
The currency used in RF Online is quite different then in any other MMO. Firstly, each race has its own "local" currency, the Accretia use a CP point system, Bellato trades with Talent and Cora trades with Desena. Consider these to be the currency that each race uses to trade each other for weapons, armor, repairs, materials, etc.
Aside from each race's unique currency, there is a "Gold Standard" in which the value of each race's currency is based upon. At any given time, the value of the CP, Talent and Desena may flucuate relative to this Gold Standard. At any given time, users can exchange their local currencies for this "Gold Standard". This simulates real life economic situations, where gold is a commodity that remains relatively unphased during times of economic recession or prosperity.
Every race HQ has a NPC called "COIN EXCHANGE" that provides users with all the economics about the current state of the market. A line chart illustrates the strength of each of the race's currency relative to each other. The Tax rate indicates what the current exchange rate charges are for converting gold <-> local currency. The Exchange Rate (includes the tax rate), shows the Gold:Local Currency Ratio. The Money Holdings shows how much Gold and Local Currency you have currently. The Exchange Adjustment allows you to exchange how much of each currency you wish to have.
What are things that affect your race's currency? For one, a race that has control over the central mining area of the Crag will benefit from a lower tax rate, in return, increasing the payback of gold to local currency exchange. If your race does not have control of the central mining area of the Crag, your race will experience an increased tax rate on the exchange rate, which means buying gold will be more expensive and you will get less local currency for your gold.
Though this feature in the game is wonderful, it will probably not be taken advantage of till much later in the game when the economic status of each race has stabilized and shows a fairly consistent pattern from constant warring. Players from each race will find that there are key patterns in their war behaviors. Certain races will win certain days of the week, certain times of the day, etc. During these times, players of each race can stock up on either forms of their currency to take advantage of various economic situations.
Ore
Mining in RFO is a necessity and its easy, you can AFK mine pretty much 24/7.
ORE plays an integral part of the game. They are required for crafting most items. Furthermore, you may get lucky every now and then and acquire Tallics, which are used for upgrading weapons/armors/shields, bestowing them with special effects/powers.
Here are some quick steps to get mining started:
1. Go to the ORE npc and purchase the Mine Tool and a Battery (there are 3 types of battery, the most expensive one gives you 2 hours of mining).
2. Go to the Teleport PAD and go to "The Crag Mining Area". Once there, you will notice patches of crystal formations. Go near one of them (but not on top of one).
3. Equip your Mining Tool (it is 2-handed).
4. You will get a window that says "ORE" with a toggle button "mine/move". Choose what kind of ORE you want to mine (blue, red, green, yellow and black). It doesn't matter what color the crystal formation is, the yield will all be the same, so if you want Black ore, select the black ore (see picture).
5. Now, click on the button, it should toggle to "MINING" mode. Move around until the message "Start Digging" appears. Once it starts digging, the mining process will have begun. Just sit back and watch the ORES pile up in your inventory. Feel free to switch to another ORE color whenever you want. It will automatically start a new dig when you have finished mining each ore.
*** There is 3 different mining rates depending on where you are mining. When you are in the CRAG, right where you teleport to from town, that area has the slowest mining rate (about 1 ORE mined every 30-45 seconds). If you go nearer towards the center of the CRAG, it will have higher rates. At the mid-mountain range, the mining rate is about 20-30 seconds per ORE. If you mine at the core of the CRAG, you will get about 1 ORE every 7-10 seconds. The only problem is this, the closer towards the center you go, the more likelihood you will be engaged in a PvP battle against the other races. The good thing about the slow mining rate area is that it is protected by Sentry towers (prevents spawn camping of opposing races). This is why the race control over the center of the CRAG is so crucial in this game. Getting more and higher quality ore at the center of the CRAG plays a huge advantage to each particular race, which is why the all out war every 8 hours is so critical.
After acquiring the ore in your inventory, you have 2 choices: 1) Sell them to a NPC for Gold OR 2) Refine them at the ORE NPC so that you can use the refined ore to craft items. Below is a chart of the materials you can get from refining the ore.

Materials
There are various materials in the game that drop and can be exchanged for other goods such as currency. Furthermore, these materials form the basis of any race's production. Craftsmen of each race utilitize these materials and can produce weapons of mass destruction with them. The items drop and are collected from dead monsters. Below is a chart of such items that are available.
When you are mining, you receive ores that can be sold for Talent or be Processed for Refined Ore Materials. These Refined Ore Materials are used for crafting items, especially weapons. You can also sell these Refined Ores to the NPC, but you will get Gold in exchange instead of local currency. Therefore, Refined Ores can be considered to be a non-depreciatable commodity, similar to gold, since its Gold Value never fluctuates.
