As of Yesterday DC Universe is now 100% free to play. The game is not only on the PC but it is also gaining popularity on the PS3 as well. Now you can play with all the legendary super heroes and villains such as batman, superman, and the joker. The officially announcement from Sony was this
“We are confident that going free-to-play will expand the action combat experience of DC Universe Online by making the game more accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game their way,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “With a portfolio that includes three successful free-to-play games – EverQuest II: Extended, Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures – we have extensive knowledge and experience to apply to DCUO and are thrilled to be taking the game free-to-play today.”
With all free MMOs you normally have different tiers of payment plans you can do in the game. DC universe is just the same with the following 3 tiers

Free - You can join the game and go to most of the places in the game. The ones you are excluded from of course are the DLC packs that you can individually buy.

Premium - Once you spend at least 5 dollars on the game you will have premium access. This will give you additional character slots, extra inventory, and higher cash limits. (This is a great marketing method to get people to start spending a few bucks on the game).

Legendary - This is for a 15 dollar a month fee. You get all DLC packs at no extra cost, 16 character slots, 50 inventory slots, the ability to form leagues, and other benefits not yet outlined.

The game even has a nifty video announcing the free to play event. Check it out here.
