Blizzard has just released the followers page for diablo 3. Followers are pretty much mercenaries for hire in diablo 2 but they are far more in depth this time around. They have an actual back story, they have specific spells, and they can actually be more than just a meat shield for players fighting end game bosses.

The best part is they feel like actual unique classes. Right now you have the option for 3 different classes:

Templar - A melee focused character
Scoundrel - A ranged attacker
Enchantress - A magic user.

While the 3 seem pretty mundane on their descriptions, each one has their own unique skills. You actually get to level them up and give them unique skills based on how you want to fight with them.
