patches can usually get more stuff done anyways, why let me show you an example:

ok so in FFXI they released chain of promethia and everyone was expecting to see the ability to own your own chocobo. Only problem is everyone would have to get the expansion for that to work, so they needed to do something to bring new content to everybody for free at the same time- aka a patch

Blizzard in patches public good stuff like revamps of all classes, crossing bgs or world pvp too

i think that sucks bigtime balls man

It has it's good and bad points.. With new expansions we would constantly see new features introduced, ie.. new lands, new instances and more items..

However with the main downfall being the cost.. Lower level characters and people joining the game for the first time would be put at even more of a disadvantage and have a very slim chance of catching up with people and getting to raid etc with them...

I agree with patches instead of expansions, look at how much better it was made with the Argent Dawn. They've already got zones floating around, too many more expansions and level 60-70, 70-80, and beyond and we'll find out that there is a whole world under Kalmidor that nobody new about until some cataclysm oppened a door to it.
