Edit: Guide to High Sec Piracy
Ship:
When you choose your ship in high sec, you have to remember two things.
-The target has to think he can beat you
-You have to be able beat the target
I’d say that a frigate is ideal for the job, not only because it’s not very intimidating, but it also packs a punch. In the beginning, you’ll probably not get any fights where your enemy has both a decent tank and decent firepower. A mining barge with light drones will often be your most dangerous foe, or cruisers with something similar (remember not to choose targets that are too big for you! For a beginner, barge/cruiser will often be enough to cope with. Move on once you feel ready, if you can/want to).
Flagging:
Once you’ve found a target, the goal will be to engage it without CONCORD ripping you to shrapnel’s. When a ship is flagged to you, you will be able to attack it for 15 minutes. This duration renews if the target attacks you or steals any of your belongings. These two things are also what makes the target flagged in the first place.
How to proceed:
It is usually easiest to pick on miners. They are also very easy to find. Retriever’s (A mid-sized mining barge,) is flown by a lot of miners, and will in most cases have modules worth 4m or more. You can also try ransoming the ship for something around 50% of the ship & strip miner’s worth. The easiest way is usually the following:
1. You approach the miner
2. You set good or bad standings towards the miner’s corporation, unless he/she is in a newbie-corporation. Look trough the people at local, and see who has gotten a symbol by their portrait. This way, you can see who is in the target’s corporation.
3. You jettison one ammunition charge or something, to create your own jettison can
4. You open the miner’s jettison can (we assume the miner is jetcan-mining, like most others)
5. You move all the ore in the miner’s jettison can over in your own. Don’t mind the warning that pops up – It only says that the miner will now be able to attack you, along with his corporation (for 15 minutes, mind). Step 2 will let you see if there are a lot of people that can come to the target’s aid during this period.
6. You now hope that the miner decides to engage you – Open a conversation with the target as soon as you know you’re winning, and ask the target to cease fire. If the target doesn’t, blow it up and reap your reward. If he/she does cease fire, set a reasonable ransom amount, and hope the target pays. If not, finish it, and sell the modules!
