I was curious as to what peoples strategies for more successful Heroic Opportunities.
I've tried to start them by telling the group and waiting 2-3 seconds for all special skills to stop then starting a HO, only to have it fail.
Also how can I set up a hotbutton for telling a group I want to start a HO and then having a 3 second delay before the actual HO is triggered.

Only way to put in a delay is using a spell/ability for this.

Why don't you jsut PUSH the button your self. Have a macro do all the writing.

cant you just make a macro button telling the gruop the HO is incoming and then write somthing like /pause 3 (pause 3 seconds). then use /cast spell or ability or something?

Basically the reason your HO's are failing is because people are casting/using skills despite the 3 second warning. The 2 most important people are the person who triggers the HO and the then the person that starts the first chain. After that it cannot be broken, it just expires after 10 secs if nobody advances it.
A macro would certainly help on the trigger member's part to get the delay right, but you really just need good group members that listen. Additionally the person who triggers the HO should make sure the next person knows to taunt, or whatever they need to do, to start the HO as soon as possible. The longer it sits there, the more likely someone will have to cast a heal or something and break it.

Well you wont have to worry about your HOs failing anymore. They now can only be aborted by someone using their HO key and even then it only initiates a new chain. The best way prior to this to do HOs was to use teamspeak and get everyone on the same page doing a verbal countdown.

We Use Team Speak........ it works very very well. Verbal communication... much like our clan life was in MOHAA.
