Artisan Starter Guide

What the heck is this about?
Tradeskills are very different in EverQuest 2 so this FAQ is an attempt to describe how the basics work in order to get started into tradeskilling.

What is an Artisan?
The Artisan is an archetype with 3 classes and 9 subclasses available. The Artisan replaces the tradeskills found in other games. Artisans level up just like Adventurers but they have their own experience completely separated from the Adventurer experience.
Artisans start at level 3 and goes to level 50 at game release. Artisans are not really separate, any adventurer character can level up an Artisan as well. It is also possible to
only level up a character as an Artisan, in other words you can have a level 7 Adventurer and a level 50 Artisan in the same character. Currently, you need to do the citizenship quest on the adventurer side to gain access outside the hamlets and newbie areas so it isn't really possible to create a pure artisan.

How do an Artisan gain experience?
Artisans gain experience from creating items. Artisans do not gain experience from killing stuff, experience from adventuring goes to the Adventurer experience. Likewise, experience from crafting goes to the Artisan experience so you cannot level up an Adventurer with crafting. The two experiences are completely separate and unrelated.

What are the archetype, class and subclass?
From level 3 to 9 you are an Artisan. You can craft all sort of items on these levels. From level 10 you have to choose one class out of 3. From level 20 you have to choose one subclass out of 3 available for the class. See the Artisan Classes thread on this board for a brief description of all the classes and subclasses.

How do I get started in the crafting business?
There is an Artisan quest available on the Isle of Refuge. It is highly recommended to do this quest since it works like a tutorial as well. After this, you need to obtain Recipe books. Some of these are sold by merchants, other are dropped from encounters. You can always obtain recipes for basic items from merchants all the way up to level 50. Some of the more interesting recipes are from dropped books and it is recommended to try to obtain all of them for your choosen branch. One book is Artisan Refinements volume 4 which is drop only but contains recipes you need for crafting the better stuff for several levels ahead.

Can I solo as an Artisan?
Yes and no. You are self sufficient up to level 10. From 10 and up you will need materials made by other Artisan classes. There is a lot of interdependency between the classes. Co-operation is the key here.

What is a tradeskill society?
The tradeskill society is a social structure within the game. It resembles guild structures and its members work for it to raise its status. An Artisan must be a member of a society to be able to craft. You can have your own tradeskill machines in your house but fuels needed can only be obtained in a tradeskill cellar which you must be a member of to access.

What about harvesting, is that only for Adventurers?
It's both. The different harvesting skills increase by using them. Adventurers harvest to obtain materials to sell to Artisans and perhaps gather that elusive rare thing needed for a good item. Artisans harvest not only to gather materials, they harvest to complete quests given by NPC's in the tradeskill cellars. These quests raise status of the society. The harvesting skills are capped by level, either Adventurer or Artisan level whichever is higher of them. It is recommended to always keep your harvesting skills at a maximum, the skill raises relatively slowly and there are minimum requirements for different material tiers.

What's up with the volume number of books?
The volume number tells you what level you need to be to be able to scribe the recipes
into your Recipes book. Typically, as soon as you level you buy the next volume and scribe it or scribe those hard earned dropped books of the same volume number.

How do I obtain supplies?
It is done by going out and harvest raw materials. You can also buy harvested from other Adventurers or Artisans. There are components you cannot make with your class, you will have to use the services from other Artisans in order to obtain these. There is an interdependency between the classes and subclasses. As of this edition of the FAQ, it is not yet known if the NPC's in the tradeskill instances will sell basic supplies as a perk when the associated society gains level.

Where do I craft?
Each hamlet around the cities has several tradeskill cellars. They are accessed through a door and is an instanced zone. It contains all machines needed for all crafting. Such a cellar can for example be found at the bank building in Castleview Hamlet in Qeynos, look for a pair of sloping doors. Each tradeskill cellar belongs to a tradeskill society you must join before you have access. One of the cellars is the wholesaler and everyone can join this. After choice of class you can join another tradeskill society beloning to your class. You can only join the wholesaler and one of these class societys at any time.

How do I craft?
You start with doubleclicking a machine, be it a furnace, a loom, a sawhorse or whatever you need for your crafting. This opens your recipe book showing the recipes applicable to the selected machine. Select a recipe by clicking it and push the Craft button. A new window will show up with the ingredients needed for the item. All of them are automatically selected but you can manually select another material if you wish. For example, I wish to refine a mineral into Fossil Temper, I select the recipe and the window shows a Salt as primary ingredient and a Vial of Mucus as added material. A fuel is also selected, for this it is a candle. Fuel of different types are sold by one of the merchants in the cellar. You then select Start and see the process window show up.

What are those bars and stuff in the Process window?
First about item quality, there are four quality levels possible. To take the Fossil Temper as example, the levels are named Crude Fossil Temper, Shaped Fossil Temper, Fossil Temper and Pristine Fossil Temper. The topmost green bar (I call it Durability) shows the possible quality of the item you are crafting. There are tics in the bar and when the bar reaches such a tic it will lower the final quality by one step and the corresponding individual progress bars are removed. The blue bar under it shows the progress (I call it the Progress). When it reaches the far right the item is ready. It also have tics and when the bar reaches a tic the corresponding quality level is reached.
Each quality level are shown below these bars, each with their own progress bars. As soon as a quality level is highlighted it is ready and will be the final result if the Stop button is clicked. If you let it progress until the top blue bar is filled the highest highlighted quality level will be the final result.

What are crafting events?
During the process a number of events can happen. You must counter these events to avoid excessive health and mana drain, yes you can actually die while crafting. These events are random and are shown as an icon in the lower part of the process window. In your Knowledge book there is a page with Tradeskills. Find the counter action with the same icon and 'cast' it to counter. For example, the event 'Minor miscalculation' has a corresponding counter named 'Theory' with the same icon in your knowledge book. You have several seconds to react so you do not need the fastest reflexes in the world to counter. Some events like 'Major miscalculation' above can be nasty and drain a good part your health if you fail to counter. You can always stop the process if you find that you can't get away alive. Note that a tradeskill death causes debt on your adventure experience and you have to find your shard just like a death from a mob. These penalties are based on a percentage of your health and power so your adventure level does not matter, nor does any buff.

Fuels? Can I gather fuels?
Fuel is storebought only. Forge, Work Bench and Stove use Coal, Loom uses Filament, Chemistry Table uses Candle, Sawhorse uses Sandpaper and Engraved Desk uses Incense. All combines use at least one fuel.

How much experience do I get for a combine?
Typically, crafting a final item gives the most experience. Also the higher the final quality the more experience you get. Intermediate items give less experience but you need them to craft final items. Refining raw materials give the least experience but you can choose to buy these instead. However, the higher the quality of refined material the higher quality is possible for a final item. The level of the recipe also affects gained experience. The colour of the recipe is the 'con' just like when you con a mob. White is an even recipe, green very easy and red almost impossible.

What determines quality?
The quality of the main ingredient affects the quality of the item crafted. It appears to not be valid for refinments, there the quality of the liquid used seems to affect the quality of the refined item. To be able to create a pristine final item, its main ingredient must also be pristine and with the addition of some luck.

What happens if a combine fails?
A combine fails when the Durability bar is completely drained. You do not lose any material, you only lose the fuel used. In some cases the main ingredient may be destroyed but it can be reused by refining it again. Some recipes never fail, scrolls seem to be an example of these.

When can I make useful items?
You can make 5, 6 and 8-slot bags at level 5, these are almost always in demand, even you yourself need them since being an Artisan is being a packrat too. These sell for a few silver, 8-slot for a lot more. At level 6 you can start making armour which is in fact good.

What dropped books are known?
It is too early to tell, the tradeskill system was !@#$%^&* only days before the beta ended. This will be updated as soon as I have information.
