As someone who just went thru Pickled's "Coding in a day if you want access to my stuff" class and having read AutoIT help file the one thing that AutoIT neeeds bad is more basic examples of applying cmds. When I first started out (5 days ago) with macros I was in same boat, I downloaded everything, cut/paste to notepad and save as .AU3 but nothing seemed to work. I had no ideas what all the pixel codes were and what this stuff is asking but sooner (tks to Pickled) I understood the method to the madness.

Now don't get me wrong I am far from the leet skilz of these other guys but it took me 5 hours to write 6 lines of code only because the help info. AutoIT offers up is meant for people with existing coding exp and not the beginner. AutoIT needs a ton more working examples and the average user could pick this up pretty darn fast.

As the link provided above by pickled does give you a very very basic idea of how to make a script work what it doesn't tell you is these scripts are alot like web pages (best viewed on MY machine) due to the window placement and stuff that the newbie user won't beable to wrap his head around.

Just my thoughts...

I just created a newer basic guide.

Check this out!

http://www.tault.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6265

Unfortunately Loraik as with ALL scripting, NONE of it is learnt in 5 minutes. To be honest... Auto IT 3 is probably the easiest language on earth to use.

The real secret is to go out and buy a basic book on Dummies guide to programming principles, to get a fundamental knowledge of how the computer stores and reads information etc..

Nothing at this level comes easy, but finding the right starting point helps, there are lots of web resources to which give you basic guides to scripting and coding.

Get this, almost all programming languages are extremely similar, once you master one you can adapt to others easily (differences is called a change in syntax). Unless you plan on getting down to Assembly code which is when you have 5 years free to study :P

Which if I get time I will dig out and post links here to those interested.

Please not I a note an affiliate of Tault, I just do this stuff off my own back for free.

Thanks for all your hard work pickled, I know you prob. get alot of "your da man" and "leet azz pickled" but you are truely a good guy for doing this stuff and sharing with people with lesser minds... :)

Hi all, I need a little help getting started. I love to fiddle with things but can't even get started.
I tried to do like the beginner guide said, save to notepad and such. I can but it won't let me save as a .au3 file? Just as a .txt file. ? Is this ok?

I got the au icon, then when I click on it get the message 'end if' not found... Not asking for you to hold my hand, just get me on the right path so I can tinker with it. I have zero xp with this but find it facinating. I have tried quite a few times with no sucess.
One more question that a few of us might have....do you cut and paste the whole thing as is or take some lines out? I have been coping the whole thing from the beginning to where it says end if at the very bottom.......Thanks for any guidence...:)

Just click on the name of the file and rename it to have the .au3 extention.

I think Pickled yanked ALL of his stuff when the Admin was screwing with him.
