After getting on Isle, then get character up to lvl 5+ DO NOT do this earlier it wont work.
1. Talk to Derek, for the tradeskill quest the first part is to move things.
2. Head into the tradeskill after reaching lvl 5, and don't move the furniture.
3. To the left after entering forest the stone and the tree in the corner, then leave and come back, again it will be there for you to mine and forest, and each time you will get 1 skill point in Mining and Foresting, and the benefit of the stone and elm that you don't have to look for outside.
4. Do this till you max out skill and before you leave the island, then finish the quest unless you want to just mine 1 piece of tin and 1 of elm.

Nice post although you can only get your skills to 30 at level 6 before leaving the newbie island.

I could be mistaken on this but you can't get artisan to lvl 9 until you finish that quest.
After you finish the quest you get access to use the forage and stuff that allows you to get to lvl 9... but if you finish the quest you can't use that anymore to get harvest skill up.
But then again I could be wrong never really played with that quest much but that was my understanding of how it worked.
