This is going to sound very geeky - however i play everquest everywhere. I use a portable - Emachines m6811 - check out stats at e4me.com. only change i have made was to max out the ram. (AMD 64 Chip)

So i discovered this little treat when i was at a cafe the other day. We all know that when we use our portables unplugged that they run slower to conserve battery juice. Now a seat near a plug comes available and so i move to the seat and plug in my computer and start playing... absolutely amazing ... the game plays like four or more times faster. i run and zip across everywhere. Everyone does think i am using a speed hack.

Now - i dont now anything about speed hacks or anything because apparently they mean you you cut into the stream of data and thats not something i know about. These results are reproducable, and the oppisite is true as well, sometimes if i unplug the computer it will either slow or the grafics will freak out and the computer must be rebooted

Couple things to know about this - 1. On the races etc timed events you dont gain much because your running at your processor speed so you dont gain time. .. When i bought the computer (its about 3 months old now) i always ran faster than everyone.. within reason .. horses still went faster than me (the fast ones) but i would run faster than the most agile in the group. .. Now i got a virus .. trojan, and suddenly my computer slowed, which is normal, but my run speed slowed too. i didn't realize this or even really connect them for a while, but after formatting was back to normal.

Anyone else confirm?

I have two computers one being an emachines m6805 laptop what you are seeing is a glitch. It does not make you faster. On my other computer when I look at the toon on the laptop he is running and hitting as fast as everyone else. However, it is a bit glitchy the toon on the laptop will often dissappear and reappear on the screen and what not. On the laptop it will even look as though you pass people but once you stop they will pop next to you some seconds later if they are following you.

I think it is a wireless problem possiably. I haven't seen it happen plugged in through ethernet. But then again I don't use ethernet very much on the laptop. Only time I've seen it happen really is when I close the lid with EQ 2 running and move to a differant part of the house.

I agree it is something of a glitch - however i am forced to disagree with you about the speed issue. In long distance races, ie, running through the forest to Nek castle (and i am also speaking to them on teamspeak at the same time) when they hit the middle bridge, i am already to the castle and i have to wait for them to hit the castle which is a LONG wait

I dont have the stats on your computer, and i am also running off a wifi router because i cant stand to be pegged to one spot in the house..

So, in that case i have to say, so far its not disproved as a glitch

It's pretty much the same as your except a bit slower of a proccessor I have an amd 64 3000+ mobile. I think yours is a 3200 if I'm not mistaken.

I haven't really noticed a differance. If that issue happens to me I always end up quiting and restarting because it bugs the crap out of me. But I did take some time observing this on my other pc and didn't notice any differnace in run speed or attack speed even though on my laptop I seems to be going nuts! I definately would see the haracter on my laptop disappearing off the screen and running in wired directions even when I looked at my laptop and she was standing still.

That's what bugged me because I'd go to cast a spell on the laptop character and they'd be out of range because they were dissapearing off the screen. Even though when I looked on the laptop they wrre standing still. Other people have also commented on the character disappearing if I was in groups as well. So I pretty much re-log when it happens to me cause it messes up my bots.

I usually am running 3 or 4 toons on 3 diff comps at the same time. And while i havn't really taken the time to figure out why, i've definately experienced this with toons on auto follow.. they could have the same equip same horses or jboots or run speed buffs.. and yet 1 toon runs slower then the other 2 or 1 runs faster then the other 2. I honestly thought perhaps there was some kind of small racial modifier for run speed.

My friend had a laptop that he hooked up to a car battery or something weird like that (can't confirm his method) and got the same speed boost, i can confirm that there is something with power and maybe only with laptops, that makes you get a speed boost.. he was way faster than me on my horse.

I have this buddy that hooked the 120 volt mains directly to his USB port on his laptop. He was going twice as fast as me. This other guy, from Scotland, he hooked their 240 volt mains into his paralell port dhaaaam he was so fast that he was just a blur.

The speed increase you are noticing is from the game detecting your processor speed at startup on battery. Which is slower than when plugged in. The game only checks this once. All client side data is handled by the processor at its rated speed. IE I am going to run to that building over there. With this 3.2Ghz processor it will take me 6000 cpu clock cycles to get there. When u plug it in to the wall the processor goes out of its gimp mode and back up to 3.8Ghz so those 6000 cpu clock cycles it was going to take 10 seconds to get to the building now only takes you say 7 seconds. Hence the notice in movement increase. This also affects maintained buffs icons (actuall buff timers are server side), NPC movement, and I'm sure alot of other things. This bug that you are noticing it essentially what the speed hacks do that get people banned.
