0-100 fishing without ever catching a monster! : FFXI General Discussions

I started fishing on one of my mules who's highest lvl is 17, as most of you know this would pose a problem when it comes time to fish anywhere but noob areas. Well instead of trashing my already lvl 30 fishing and start fishing on my main I decided to see how high I could get only fishing in town. Granted, fishing in town does slow down gains a bit but this is a guide on how to get to 100 fishing without ever leaving the towns/boats, your only danger is traveling from town to town, but anyone who knows anything about aggros knows how to get from town to town, even on foot, safely. Anyhow, here is what I have maped out, I think its important to mention that I am currently at 76, but what has worked so far should continue to work. Also I tried to do as little moving around as possible and I have taken the new system into consideration.

Level 1-19: Bastore Sardines/Quus (Guild Pier)

Place: Port Windurst
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod
Bait: Sabiki Rig
Notes: You can sell these fish right back to the guild, or at the AH. The sardines can be used to gain Windurst fame by trading them to a npc near the guild.

Level 19-33: Tricolored Carp/Dark Bass

Place: Bastok Markets (Waterway)
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod
Bait: Little Worms/Insect Balls
Notes: You will get alot of Moat Carp that can be used in the Lu Shang's Pole quest.

Level 33-47: Black Eel

Place: Bastok Markets (Water Storage)
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod
Bait: Little Worms
Notes: These get good guild and npc prices.

Level 47-56: Gold Carp

Place: Bastok Markets (Waterway)
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod
Bait: Little Worms/Insect Balls
Notes: More Moats for the Lu Shang's Quest. These also get good guild/npc/AH prices.

Level 56-66: Noble Lady

Place: Selbina/Muhara Ferry
Pole: Composite Fishing Rod
Bait: Sliced Sardine/Minnow
Notes: If you fish from the steps of the Ferry you will not reel in any monsters, also becareful of when pirates attack if you are a lower level. While these do fetch good prices everywhere you will also hook alot of Guru Tuna, and tuna snap poles and lines like crazy so be ready.

Level 66-76: Silver Shark

Place: Selbina/Muhara Ferry
Pole: Composite Fishing Rod
Bait: Slice of Bluetail/Meat Ball
Notes: Again with the fishing from the steps and the broken poles/lines. Using the Meat Ball raises your chances of breaking your pole as some pretty big fish bite on it. Other than that, the pull really nice guild/npc prices.

Level 76-86: Bastore Bream

Place: Port Windurst
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod/Composite Fishing Rod
Bait:Sliced Sardine/Minnow
Notes: Under the new system I have yet to break a Mithran Rod on these guys. The Sliced Sardines seemed to catch fish faster than the Minnow did. Your line can be broken but it rarely happens and is a neglectable hazzard. It's also pretty safe to say that any fish after this point will get you really good gil somewehre, but these are hard to sell back to the guild because so many fisherman fill it up so quickly.

Level 86-96: Black Sole

Place: Lower/Port Jeuno
Pole: Mithran Fishing Rod/Composite Fishing Rod
Bait: Sinking Minnow/Sliced Cod
Notes: From my research, the Sliced Cod will cut down on the number of secondary fish caught so you can focus on gains. Best to sell these at the AH. They are used to synth Sole Sushi, one of the most popular, if not THE most popular, melee DD foods around, and cooks will pay good gil to get thier hands on this stuff.

Level 96-100: Legendary Fish

Place: Selbina/Muhara Ferry
Pole: Lu Shang's/Composite Fishing Rod/Mithran Fishing Rod
Bait: Meat Ball
Notes: An uncalled for amount of broken poles catching these guys. There are Legendary Fish elsewhere in the game but the ones on the ferry are the only ones that can be caught without catching a monster.

Overview notes: You should always use fishing clothing for the best chances at catches. Wooden poles like the Mithran Fishing Rod are now more durable than they used to be and wear the fish down faster than the others. If you ever want to check out the full info on any fish the Clan Wind database is probably the most used and favored fishing database on the web. While it is ideal to go after fish whos cap is within 5 points of your skill, this guide was built for ease, not speedy leveling of the skill.
