Okay, to start things off, I'm from Windy, Fishing-Central, so if you are from Sandy or Bastok, you might have to do some traveling. Just thought I'd state that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fishing is not an easy trade. It gets pretty expensive and can be really boring, unless you have a fishing bot of course, whose script can be easily be attained from the Macro forum on this site. I also recommend getting Chocobo first, makes things a lot easier. I tried to minimize the traveling but some things can't be avoided. I also recommend do experiment a little, see what's best for YOU. Just don't do stupid combo's like Bamboo Rod and Sinking Minnow or Composite Rod and Sabiki Rig (small rods go with small lures, big rods go with big lures).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gear: (If you want to get other gear, by all means do it.)
Having the full set of fishing gear helps (Fisher, Angler) which gives +1 to fishing skill so you don't miss as much as you might naked. Prices vary so much that I can't keep track, but you can get a full set for about 10k-15k. If you have the money splurge on the gear, if not you can survive without it.
Fiber Glass Fishing Rod - From what I read and tried it works better than the Carbon Fishing Rod. It might be in my mind but fish bite more with Fiber Glass Fishing Rod and if you are fishing the right thing, they will never break, just keep one incase on the slight chance it breaks. You can get one for about 2k on AH.
Composite Fishing Rod - Supa great rod. I have yet to see a broken one, but I check just incase. A broken Composite Rod sells for about as much as a... not-broken one? Well, yeah, that's how it is. Composite Rods are great if you are low-level fishing and need to rake in money with Moat Carp. They are super expensive though, about 10k, but they are totally worth it.
Insect Balls - If you need money, get these babys and... well I'll explain later on in Guide. About 300-400 gil for stack.
Sabiki Rig - Great tackle, can catch up to 3 fish AT THE SAME TIME! But the only problem it is good only for low lvl, so probably won't use beyond 20'ish, maybe even 10'ish. About 2k for one.
Fly Lure - Needed to fish out Salmon and Trout. About 400 gil for one.
Sinking Minnow - Combo it with Composite Rod for the huge fishy. About 2k, I think, at the AH.
Rogue Rig - I not able to state my personal experience with this rig because I really don't have much money on me, I keep spending it on crystals and items to work on cooking. There have been many mixed reviews about this Rig, some say it is the "Mother-of-All-Rigs" others say that it's crap. More people seem to say that it is used to catch non-moving items like rusty crap and shell stuff. But if you get the Lu Shung rod i hear it can be a great combo with Moat Carp. I gotta do more research on this sucker. *Note: Requires about 50 skill to use it efficently, from what I read and heard*
Mithra Rod - Same as the Rogue Rig, this baby goes for about 20k on AH. But I hear a lot of stories about this. My friend broke every rod, even the Composite, except for this one. This rod is able to catch both big and small fish so if you get the chance to buy one, by all means get it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting Off:
0-8 - *Salt Water Fishing* Get your Glass Fiber Rod and Sabiki Rig (and fishing bot if you have/want one) then head over to Windy Port. If you havn't done it already join the Fishing Guild. Get some "Fishing Support" from any of the NPCs and either turn on your bot or start fishing, whatever. You will catch one of the following: Sardines, Quus, or Kelp. The NPC right by the by the bridge to go on the Fishing Guild boat (forget her name but she is a Tarutaru) will give you 70 gil per Sardine, but you can only do with once every several of hour or so. A stack of Sardines go for about 700 gil at the AH. Quus sell for crap in Windy but I sell them for about 2k in Jeuno. Kelp I don't bother with, just sell it to the Fishing Guild.

9-11 - *Fresh Water Fishing* Equip you Composite Rod and Insect Paste and head to Windy Woods. Stick around by the fountain and start fishing Moat Carp like crazy. Moat Carp sell extremely well (4k-5k per stack) and they sell fast. You can start this earlier if you want but you risk losing a lot of money on lost catch and Insect Balls. I usually went back to this method when I was running low on money. With the Composite Rod you can catch rusty gear without fear of it breaking. The Insect Ball will make it so you ONLY catch Carp, or gil, or rusty crap, or rings, but you don't get no stupid crabs or nothing. Mostly Carp.

12-20 - *Fresh Water Fishing* Some people say to go to Mhura or Selbina and fish for Yellow Globe, but I find this to be EXTREMELY SLOW!!! First off, you use Glass Fiber and Sabiki Rig which catchs Sardines WAY more than Yellow Globes, but if you don't want to travel a lot you could do this. A stack of Yellow Globes sell for 2.4k, but they don't always sell. Here's the big jump, and the long treck. Buy a fly lure, about 400 gil on AH, and head to Sandoria (is that spelled right?). Go to East Ron. to the Cheval River and start fishing for Cheval Salmon and Shining Trout. Salmon can sell for pretty good in Windy, so if you have another character just send them to them via-mail. If not just save it. They are used to make Salmon Subs, from what I understand. I don't even bother with trying to sell Trout on AH, I just sell it to the nearest NPC for 50 gil per Trout, not bad money.

20-30 - *Fresh Water Fishing* Hehe, okay now, head back to Windy area ;P to West Sarutabaruta and start fishing for Giant Catfish and Dark Bass. Equip your composite rod and a sinking minnow and start fishing. Fish these suckas and sell them off at AH. Check prices first... don't get ripped off, if you don't want to wait, then just sell them to NPC's for like 100 something gil. Lvl'ing with these will take a while but sure and true you will reach your goal.

Well, that's about it, from 0-30 in four easy steps. It takes a while but if you work hard enough, or wait long enough with a bot, then you can be like the other players who use bots, and be super rich!!

See, what they do is get to fishing skill 55-60 and then they go to West Sarutabaruta and face the ocean. The then equip Carbon/Glass Fiber Rod with the Shrimp Lure/Sinking Minnow (I forget which one exactly). Then then fish Blue Tail out like CRAZY with a bot and sell the stack for just about 10k PER STACK!! They rack up cash by doing this A LOT, then head over to Sandoria and do the Lu Sung Fishing Rod Quest. (Turn in 10k of Moat Carp). They use the money they got and buy stacks upon stack of Moat Carp and turn it in and get 100 gil back per Carp. Then they get the Lu Sung Rod, equip it, then head back and start fishing for Blue Tail again, racking up the cash. This is what I want to do, but I have a long way to go till then.
*************************************************************
That about ends this Guide, I hope it can help some PPL out. If you have any suggestions or tips, please submit them. Thx

This site gives good info. about what kind of fish hang around in the areas:

P.S. There are a lot of people out there looking for Fishing-Bot users. They spend all their time running up and accusing anyone with a fishing pole of using Bots, even though most of them do *cough myself included cough* but come on, they arn't even GM's. They should let the GM's do their job and quit being cry-babies. It's not like the software isn't out there for them to use it.

Edit by Duuude007 about synthing:

All synthesizing skills will begin requiring equally-high secondary-even tertiary skills to both increase skill levels, and make more unique items. This pairing (likely with Culinary) begins around level 20, and becomes a nearly exclusive requirement (for profit) by the time you reach skill 60. It is an effective way to motivate people to become well-rounded individuals, and reap the truly amazing awards.

Just a correction about turning in sardines. It is a very good fame quest and it isn't time-based, you just have to zone out before you can turn in another.

This will make some of you *VERY* happy. It is actually legal to use bots as long as you are actually at the computer. If a GM actually asks you if you are using a bot you should actually tell them the complete truth. As long as you reply to them they can't do a dang thing to stop you :P

I thought it was against the User Agreement to use any 3rd party software for things like botting in-game....maybe you shouldn't tell a GM you are botting, but rather you are using macros.

Actually, you could just do what I did when I was confronted by a GM just this morning. Of course, the GM kindly approached me via a tell, requesting me to respond. I did so, and was asked about using a script.

Of course, I really don't care what happens, considering I own a gaming store which currently holds around seven copies of FFXI - so restarting won't be much of an issue. I told him I was using a script to fish. He then asked how the script actually worked.

I didn't want to tell him that it used a third party program to do so. Instead, I told him that I made it myself using Windows' built-in scripting enviornment (Windows Scripting Host).

After a long delay, he bid me a good "adventure," and told me that as long as I remained by the computer at all times (which, sorry to say, I didn't) that I should be fine. I was fine for around 52 straight hours after that - all while I was on a little vacation. ^^;;
