Hi, I just found this site and seemed like it would be worthwhile to look into. I have been playing pretty hard core for a couple of years and was curious if these bots were detectable, and if so the consequences. anyone who could shed some light on this would greatly appreciated. Very tempted to bot, but reluctant to risk losing account.

Off my vague memory not all bots are detectable, but it gets suspicous if a character is standing till for hours on end waiting for an nm. The only real risk is if somebody else bothers to report you. Also judging my my vague memory, I don't think all bots are illiegal as long as you are present at the computer or something along those lines.
The consequences with this usually invlove a temporary ban or if it's a large case of botting, possibly a deleted acount. But if you are able to do it right, it's often worth teh risk.

Bot is very hard to detect, and if you are present while using it, you can be assured that there would be no problem with your account.
The only possibility of being caught is that someone reports you. But, if you are around when the Gm calls you, you would be able to respond, thus not considered as botting (to them).
Programs and hacks (Anything that messes with the server side information) however, are much much easier to be detected. Thus, it is not advisable to use them.
