Cooking 0-93 (Yes! 93 now!) for the Patient Farmer
================================================================

Patience is the greatest virtue you can have when taking up cooking. The reason is, many of your ingredients can be farmed or gardened if you plan ahead and know where to look. Cooking is also the most valuable and relevant craft for mages and paladins from very early on. I will attempt to include ingredient sources where possible, as well as selling strategies.

Cooking at the early levels is a rather simple and inexpensive process. The key is to use recipes that require cheap crystals and ingredients, and to acquire those materials by farming and gardening as much as possible. In my opinion, you should not pursue cooking until you can comfortably travel between the three major cities. I strongly recommend a level 20 job, a fully leveled subjob, a chocobo license and the gate crystals for the three major teleport crags: Dem, Holla and Mea. Most of your time cooking should be spent in Windurst with advanced imaging support, but you should have access to all three regions to take advantage of ingredient availability and price flux. Later on, you'll want the Altepa Gate Crystal for easy access to Rabao.

In this guide, I place a fair amount of emphasis both on acquiring your own materials, and on using recipes for leveling that yield products you will actually be able to get use out of. Still, at some levels, you cannot avoid making almost useless items purely for the purpose of skilling up. Where this happens, sell the items to an NPC vendor to free up inventory, cut your losses, and move on.

My Reason For This Guide
================================================================

Simply put, though I admire the hard work and considerable thought put in to the other cooking guides in the public domain, I wanted to put one together that fit my personality and approach to gameplay, as I'm sure there are one or two other players out there who have similar views. That, and I got tired of constantly answering questions from my LS mates. This guide will go on our LS website, and free me forevermore.

Acknowledgements
================================================================

I wish to give credit and thanks to Belot, whose 0-60 cooking guide at http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?f ... 8769518389 put me on the path to culinary competence and gustatory greatness. And thanks to Warmatrix and Liubeibei on Fairy for their insights regarding the stratospheric levels of cooking.

Crystals
================================================================

In cooking, you will primarily use five types of crystals, in the following order of importance: Fire, Water, Earth, Dark and Wind. If you were to purchase these crystals from an Auction House on Fairy, you could expect to pay approximately the following prices:

Fire - 5,000/stack
Water - 1,200/stack
Earth - 1,000/stack
Dark - 7,000/stack
Wind - 3,000/stack

These prices are not static, and in fact vary widely, but they are the prices I have often seen when forced to resort to the Auction House for my materials as of March 2005.

It should be noted that at much higher levels of cooking, Dark Crystals will become important for a few key recipes (Grape Juice, Yagudo Drinks and Marron Glace). By the time you're ready to use them with any consistency, you'll be able to earn enough gil through cooking to simply purchase them from the Auction House.

It is my opinion that crystals are best farmed for with a job between levels 5 and 7. While this level will only earn you 18-36 experience points per kill, it allows you to spend a minimal amount of time dispatching the easy prey enemies around a city in order to acquire a sufficient quantity of crystals. Once your expendable job reaches level 8 or 9, it is a simple matter to kill it a few times for the crystal advantage gained by the subsequent de-leveling.

Each city offers different prey with different drops, and so I will focus instead on crystal types and where best to acquire them. Remember to get Signet, or you will not get crystal drops! Note that there are numerous other places you can acquire the following crystals, these are simply some of the easiest that come to mind.

Fire Crystals: South & North Gustaberg - dropped off vultures, non-armored Goblins (weavers, thugs); Dangruf Wadi - dropped off non-armored Goblins, lizards; West & East Ronfaure - dropped off Orcs and Goblins; West Sarutabaruta - dropped off non-armored Goblins; Inner & Outer Horotuto Ruins - dropped off non-armored Goblins.

Water Crystals: South & North Gustaberg - dropped off crabs, Quadavs; Dangruf Wadi - dropped off crabs, leeches; Zeruhn Mines - dropped off crabs, leeches; Palborough Mines - dropped off Quadavs; West & East Ronfaure - dropped off crabs; West & East Sarutabaruta - dropped off crabs, pugils; Giddeus - dropped off pugils; Ghelsba - dropped off pugils.

Earth Crystals: South & North Gustaberg - dropped off worms, sheep; Zeruhn Mines - dropped off worms; Palborough Mines - dropped off hares; West & East Ronfaure - dropped off worms, hares; West & East Sarutabaruta - dropped off hares, mandragoras; Giddeus - dropped off worms.

Wind Crystals: South & North Gustaberg - dropped off bees, bats; Zeruhn Mines - dropped off bats; West & East Ronfaure - dropped off bats; Ghelsba - dropped off bats; West & East Sarutabaruta - dropped off bees; Inner & Outer Horotuto Ruins - dropped off bats.

Dark Crystals: West Ronfaure, La Theine Plateau, Jugner Forest & Palborough Mines - dropped of funguars; Eastern & Western Altepa Deserts - dropped off Anticans.

Note Regarding Ingredients
================================================================

I try as often as possible to provide you with a variety of sources for acquiring ingredients as inexpensively as possible.

Often times, the same ingredients are used repeatedly in different recipes as you continue to level your chosen craft.

Instead of repeating the same sources over and over again, I will simply include a (+) when the sources for a given ingredient can be found earlier in the guide. Also, I indicate the jobs (in parenthesis) which most stand to benefit from certain key recipes.

A Note About Synth Success, Skillups and HQ
================================================================

You probably already know that there are eight days in a Vana'diel week, each of which is associated with a specific element. And depending upon what crystals you're using, many believe the elemental influence of a given day can play a significant role in the outcome of each attempt at synthesis. In fact, taking paranoid superstition a step further, each of the 8 directions on the compass is associated with a constellation in the night sky of Vana'diel; there is currently a great deal of debate as to the alleged influence they may or may not have. Simply put, I'd recommend facing the direction of your crystal's elemental association and throwing a pinch of rock salt over your shoulder. The emphasis in this guide is successful synthesis of genuinely useful recipes.

First, let's cover the days of the week and their order:

Firesday > Earthsday > Watersday > Windsday > Iceday > Lightningday > Lightsday > Darksday

Need to remember who does what to whom? Here is the elemental hierarchy:

Fire melts Ice blocks Wind (think of an igloo) erodes Earth absorbs Lightning splits Water douses Fire.

Light and Dark are in direct opposition to each other. In other words, they are each strong against each other offensively, and weak against each other defensively. At least, that's the best way I can explain it. Luckily, you won't deal with them much when cooking.

And now, the elemental associations of the constellations:

DARK | North | Odin
LIGHT | Northeast | Alexander
ICE | East | Shiva
WIND | Southeast | Garuda
EARTH | South | Titan
LIGHTNING | Southwest | Ramuh
WATER | West | Leviathan
FIRE | Northwest | Ifrit

Other than the facts stated above (you can view the star chart on the roof of the opistery around the corner from the Culinary Guild...and don't make the same mistake many do by confusing directions), I do not claim to be an authority on the subject. I merely offer my own personal observations.

SUCCESS: It seems to me that I have the greatest synth success when the day and direction I'm facing match my crystal. [Ex: Fire crystal on Firesday facing Northwest (Ifrit).]

SKILLUP: I seem to experience greatest skillups on the day and facing the direction against which my crystal is weak. [Ex: Fire crystal on Watersday facing West (Leviathan).]

HI-QUAL: I have repeatedly experienced my greatest percentage of HQ on Lightsday / day of strength, facing strength. [Ex: Fire crystal on Lightsday / Iceday, facing East (Shiva).]

Of course, just by virtue of exceeding a recipe's cap, you stand a greater chance of seeing HQ results. My personal rule of thumb is: 30 levels above the cap, you have a decent (maybe 25%) chance of seeing an HQ; 50 levels above the cap, you begin to have an excellent chance of seeing an HQ (maybe 50% or more).

Disclaimer Regarding Meal Effects
===============================================================

Many of these recipes likely have different effects since the December 8 patch. Those shown here are frankly a mix of both pre- and post-patch meal effects. Those that I believe to be current, I denote with <OK>. If you are able to confirm different effects from any of these recipes, please email them to greenray@honoriscausa.info so that I may update the guide.

Finally, it is generally assumed within this guide that you will be cooking from level 3 upward with paid (not free) guild imaging support. However, for the sake of expediency, you may occasionally choose to craft near a vendor instead. This will be especially true of Pineapple Juice, Melon Juice, Melon Pie, any recipe involving San d'Oria Flour and Marron Glace.

As you progress through the guide and pass your guild tests, look for the MILESTONES in orange. They will let you know what you can do with your new found culinary skills every ten levels. They will also alert you when your odds have become decent for getting High Quality results for recipes several levels below you.

Enough of the banter. It's time to start cooking.

0-3 <OK>
================================================================
Carrot Broth (3) Yields 4 (BST)
Stacks to 12

[Water Crystal]
San d'Orian Carrot x4

Use: Lv.23 BST, calls a hare familiar

Tips: Buy carrots from Corua (G-9, South San d'Oria) for about 28 gil each

3-10 <OK>
================================================================
Orange Juice (10) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Saruta Orange x4

Use: Regenerates 1 MP every 3 seconds for 60 seconds (20 total)

Tips: Buy oranges from Baehu-Faehu (G-5, Windurst Waters) for about 32 gil each

POP QUIZ!!!
================================================================
Salmon Sub Sandwich (7) Yields 1
Stacks to 12

[Earth Crystal]
Apple Vinegar x1
Black Bread x1
Crying Mustard x1
La Theine Cabbage x1
Mithran Tomato x1
Smoked Salmon x1

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 8-10 to advance to Culinary Recruit.
HP+8, DEX+1, VIT+1, AGI+1, INT+2, MND-1, 30 minutes

Tips: Apple Vinegar is usually available in Raimbroy's Grocery in South San d'Oria. La Theine Cabbages may be grown by planting vegetable seeds and nourishing them with water crystals... this combination may also produce fire crystals. La Theine Cabbages may also be traded, 5 at a time, to Melyon in Selbina in exchange for 100 gil and a bit of fame; repeatable. Mithran Tomatoes may be bought from Ghemi Sinterilo (Dockside produce stand, Kazham) for approximately 54 gil. All of these ingredients can usually be bought at somewhat inflated prices at the culinary guild shop, or for outrageous prices from the Auction House. Keep in mind that many of your fellow crafters are lazier than you. If you make a few of these and put them on the Auction House, you'll possibly be able to sell them at significant profit.

MILESTONES:
Orange Juice (10) makes your mages happy.

10-11 <OK>
================================================================
Sliced Sardines (11) Yields 2
Stacks to 12

[Wind Crystal]
Bastore Sardine x1

Use: Fishing bait

Tips: You can fish for Bastore Sardines from salt water in and around Bastok. Or you can buy them from the fishing guild shops in Port Windurst and Selbina.

11-12
================================================================
Honey (12) Yields 4
Stacks to 12

[Wind Crystal]
Beehive Chip x4

Use: This item is expensive to come by, and is used in higher level au lait recipes much later on. It is a good ingredient to begin stockpiling early on. I wish I had. It may also be traded to Raimbroy 5 at a time for 400 gil; repeatable. Single jars of Honey also drop off of bees on occasion.
Base MP regen while resting +1, time not confirmed since update

Tips: Kill bees for the Beehive Chips they drop, and combine the Honey you synth with the Honey they drop to build your Honey stockpile more quickly.

12-14 <OK>
================================================================
Roast Mushrooms (16) Yields 1 (WHM, RDM, SMN)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Sleepshrooms (or Danceshrooms, or Woozyshrooms) x2
Rock Salt x1

Use: Roast Mushrooms are WHM food, and their HQ version, Witch Kabobs, are the WHM staple food at high levels.
MP+10, STR-1, MND+3, base MP regen while resting +2, 30 minutes

Tips: Kill funguars in Palborough Mines and around San d'Oria for Sleepshrooms. Kill crabs near most rivers for Rock Salt. I do not recommend carrying this recipe for skill up all the way to its cap of 16 due to the expense of mushrooms, and the difficulty for most people acquiring them.

14-15
================================================================
Roast Mutton (17) Yields 1 (MNK, THF, DRK, BST, RNG, SAM, NIN, DRG)
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Giant Sheep Meat x1
Dried Marjoram x1
Mhaura Garlic x1

Use: STR+3, INT-1, Attack+15%, 60 minutes

Tips: Kill sheep around Gustaberg, Ronfaure and Konschat Highlands for Giant Sheep Meat. Buy Mhaura Garlic from the Culinary guild, or from the regional vendor for whichever city controls the Kolshushu region: Ahyeekih H-10, Windurst Waters), Fiva (G-6, Port San d'Oria) or Yafafa (I-5, Bastok Markets). Cost is approximately 80 gil each. Dried Marjoram may be purchased from both the Culinarian and Alchemists' guild shops. Again, I do not recommend carrying this recipe all the way to skill level 17, due to expense and low demand for this meat dish.

15-20 <OK>
================================================================
Apple Juice (20) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Faerie Apple x4

Use: Regenerates 1 MP every 3 seconds for 135 seconds (45 total)

Tips: Buy Faerie Apples from Aveline (F-7, South San d'Oria) for approximately 40 gil each...but ONLY if San d'Oria is in first or second place in conquest. Otherwise, you will have to resort to regional vendors and hope that one of the cities has control of the Fauregandi region: Rodellieux (H-7, Bastok Mines), Sheia Pohrichamaha (B-4, Port Windurst) or Vichuel (F-4, Northern San d'Oria).

POP QUIZ!!!
================================================================
Pea Soup (18) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Blue Peas x3
Dried Marjoram x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1
Distilled Water x1

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 18-20 to advance to Culinary Initiate.
DEX-1, VIT+2, HHP+5

Tips: Blue Peas may be grown by planting grain seeds on a Watersday, and nourishing with water crystals on a Watersday. Wild Onions may be grown by planting vegetable seeds on a Lightningday or Lightsday, and nourishing with lightning crystals; however, you may find it easier to kill a few goblin thugs, which also drop this item. Distilled Water can typically be bought at any tavern for 10-12 gil, depending upon your fame.

MILESTONES:
Roast Mushrooms (16) make your WHM look favorably upon you.
Apple Juice (20) makes your mages even happier than Orange Juice.

20-23
================================================================
Meat Jerky (26) Yields 2 (MNK, THF, DRK, BST, RNG, SAM, NIN, DRG)
Stacks to 12

[Ice Crystal]
Giant Sheep Meat x1 (+)
Dried Marjoram x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)

Use: STR+3, INT-1, Attack+25%, 30 minutes

Tips: This is a very good food for you to use on low level melee jobs. I do not recommend carrying this recipe for skill up all the way to its cap of 26 due to the expense of ice crystals, and the low demand for this meat dish.

23-27 <OK>
================================================================
Insect Ball (29) Yields 12
Stacks to 12

[Earth Crystal]
Millioncorn x1
Little Worm x1
Distilled Water x1 (+)

Use: This item is bait, used most frequently to catch moat carp.

Tips: Grow Millioncorn and earth crystals all at once by planting several grain seeds on Earthsday, and nourish them with wind crystals on a Windsday or Earthsday. Little Worms may generally be acquired at your local general goods store as long as your nation is in first or second place. This is your first truly profitable recipe, made more so if you grow your own ingredients. List these a bit below the going rate at your local AH, and they should fly out the door. On Fairy, these often sell for 30 gil each inside bazaars (360 gil per stack). If you are a Fisherman, go ahead and carry this recipe to its cap of 29; you'll get good use out of it. However, if you actually like to go out and play the game like it was meant to be played, move on to the next recipe.

27-30 <OK>
================================================================
Pineapple Juice (30) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Kazham Pineapple x2

Use: Regenerates 1 mp every 3 seconds for 240 seconds (80 total)

Tips: Buy Kazham Pineapples from Ghemi Sinterilo on the dock in Kazham for the best rate, or from the regional vendor in whichever city controls the Elshimo Lowlands: Fomina (D-8, Windurst Waters), Nimia (G-8, Port San d'Oria) or Zoby Quhyo (J-7, Port Bastok). Whatever you do, do NOT pay extortionary Auction House prices for pineapples. These sell relatively well at the AH, but will sell best in your bazaar while in experience point party areas in the field. Give a few of these as backup to the mages in your party, and you'll find yourself with new friends in short order.

POP QUIZ!!!
================================================================
Vegetable Gruel (28) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Batagreens x1
Chamomile x1
Distilled Water x1 (+)
Frost Turnip x1
Rarab Tail x1
Tarutaru Rice x1

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 28-30 to advance to Culinary Novice.
HP+5, VIT-1, AGI+2, HHP+4, 3 hours

Tips: Batagreens are, for whatever sadistic reason, an Exclusive (Ex) item. This means you cannot acquire them from the AH or another player. Buy them from the Culinary Guild Salesroom. Buy Chamomile from Upih Khachla (H-9, Windurst Waters). Buy a Rarab Tail from Baehu-Faehu (the little orange-vending Tarutaru you met earlier at G-5 in Windurst Waters). Frost turnips are somewhat irritating to track down. Either buy one in San d'Oria from Aveline (inside Raimbroy's Grocery, and ONLY if San d'Oria is in first or second place), or from one of the regional vendors for whichever city controls the Valdeaunia region: Palguevion (F-6, Northern San d'Oria), Tibelda (E-6, Bastok Mines) or Zoreen (M-7, Port Windurst). Tarutaru Rice may be acquired through a variety of gardening combinations, or simply bought from Kopopo.

MILESTONES:
You can feed your tanks Boiled Crab (27).
You can make healthy profit with relative speed by churning out Insect Paste (29). Especially if you grow your own stuff.
Mages begin fantasizing about having you and your Pineapple Juice (30) in their party.

30-35 <OK>
================================================================
Meatball (35) Yields 12
Stacks to 12

[Earth Crystal]
Hare Meat x1
Distilled Water x1
San d'Orian Flour x1

Use: Bait. Used on the Selbina Ferry to catch legendary fish with high level Fishing, or so I've heard.

Tips: These ingredients are cheap. Make this recipe without guild support in San d'Oria. Bunnies in West Ronfaure drop the meat; buy water and flour inside Raimbroy's Grocery; if Sandy is in last place, you'll have to run around the corner to Corua (the carrot lady from way back when) to get your flour. These will sell slowly at the AH, even slower inside your bazaar. Simply sell them to an NPC, cut your losses and move on.

35-40 <OK>
================================================================
Melon Juice (40) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Thundermelon x1
Watermelon x1

Use: Regenerates 2 mp every 3 seconds for 135 seconds (90 total)

Tips: Both the Thundermelons and Watermelons are sold by a Goblin NPC, Scamplix, in Rabao. Depending on fame, the Thundermelons will cost up to 350 each, and the Watermelons up to 250 each. They may also be sold by Kupopo, at higher prices. On those rare occasions (on Fairy, at any rate) that one of the cities controls Kuzotz, you can get them from regional vendors: Nhobi Zalkia (G-8, Windurst Woods), Patolle (G-9, Port San d'Oria) or Vattian (G-6, Port Bastok).

POP QUIZ!!! <OK>
================================================================
Meat Mithkabob (38) Yields 6 (MNK, THF, DRK, BST, RNG, SAM, NIN, DRG)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Cockatrice Meat x1
Mhaura Garlic x1
Wild Onion x1
Kazham Peppers x1

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 38-40 to advance to Culinary Apprentice.
STR+5, VIT-1, AGI+2, INT-1, Attack+22%, 30 minutes

Tips: Cockatrice Meat is dropped by Tabar Beaks in Sauromugue Champaign. You're better off buying it, though. Mhaura Garlic may be sold by Kopopo in the Culinary Guild Salesroom, or obtained from a regional vendor for whichever city controls the Kolshushu region: Ahyeekih (H-10, Windurst Waters), Fiva (G-6, Port San d'Oria) or Yafafa (I-5, Bastok Markets). You can also obtain it via gardening: plant herb seeds on Lightningday or Lightsday, nourish with a Lightning Crystal. As mentioned previosly, Wild Onions may be gardened or obtained from goblin thugs. Kazham peppers may be bought from the NPC on the dock in Kazham where you obtained the Kazham Pineapples, or from the NPC vendor in whichever city controls the Elshimo Lowlands. Since the December 8 patch, these are no longer nearly as profitable. Make them for your parties and personal use, and move on. Finally, don't bother synthing them for your test. You'll cry if you have a break and lose a 2,000 gil piece of Cockatrice Meat. Simply buy one from the Auction House or a bazaar, trade it, and claim your Apprentice rank.

MILESTONES:
Meat Mithkabobs (38) allow you to feed your fighters, and make some profit with your bazaar near leveling zones.
Needless to say, you're even more popular with mages due to Melon Juice (40).

*****************************************************
*
* If you don't have one yet, it is time to create a
* food ingredients mule. I recommend doing so in
* Windurst, where it will have access to the guild
* salesroom, or in San d'Oria, where you can have
* it actively farm for fire crystals from orcs and
* goblins. You will send excess ingredients that
* you'll need for later recipes into storage on
* this character.

40-42
================================================================
Pie Dough (42) Yields 4
Stacks to 12

[Water Crystal]
San d'Orian Flour x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
Selbina Butter x1

{{{BEGIN SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Selbina Butter (20) Yields 4
Stacks to 12

[Ice Crystal]
Selbina Milk x1
Rock Salt x1 (+)

Use: Many recipes use this ingredient. However, it is a waste of time and gil to use it for leveling up. However, I include it here now because you are ready to start using it on a fairly regular basis.

Tips: Buy the Selbina Milk in Selbina, from Dohdjuma (G-10, Selbina), where you will get it cheapest. Otherwise, buy it from a regional vendor in whichever city controls the Zulkheim region: Bin Stejihna (G-8, Windurst Woods), Phamelise (K-9, Southern San d'Oria) or Rosswald (J-7, Port Bastok). Kopopo also carries Selbina Milk on occasion. I believe availability is determined by conquest ranking. To increse your chances of High Quality (HQ) yields on this item, consider crafting on Windsday and facing southeast (the direction of Garuda's constellation). You will use some of this for pie dough; send the rest to your ingredients mule.

{{{END SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Use: Every pie you ever make will require Pie Dough.

Tips: Acquire all of the ingredients in San d'Oria. Make a lot of pie dough. Level to 42. Send all pie dough to your mule.

42-43 <OK>
================================================================
Tomato Juice (43) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Mithran Tomato x3 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)

Use: Regenerates 1 mp every 3 seconds for 180 seconds (60 total)

Tips: This recipe is purely to get you to level 43 for little expense. Give it to the mages in your party, or use it for your own mage.

43-48 <OK>
================================================================
Apple Pie (48) Yields 4 (BLM, RDM)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Cinnamon x1
Faerie Apple x1 (+)
Lizard Egg x1
Maple Sugar x1 (+)
Pie Dough (+)

Use: This is food for BLM and RDM. MP+25, AGI-1, INT+3, 30 minutes

Tips: Cinnamon is bought from the same vendors where you acquire Kazham Pineapples, and occasionally from Benaige inside Raimbroy's Grocery; however, it is a byproduct of gardening, and has often been up to 1,000 gil cheaper bought by the stack from the AH than from NPC merchants on Fairy. Lizard eggs are most often dropped by high level lizards in such places as Crawler's Nest and Davoi. You might want to simply buy these at the AH.

48-50 <OK>
================================================================
Apple Pie (50) Yields 4 (BLM, RDM)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Cinnamon x1 (+)
Faerie Apple x1 (+)
Bird Egg x1
Maple Sugar x1 (+)
Pie Dough (+)

Use: This is food for BLM and RDM. MP+25, AGI-1, INT+3, 30 minutes

Tips: Hooray for alternate ingredients! In some recipes, you'll find that once you cap using lizard eggs, you can swap out for bird eggs and gain another two levels in cooking. Bird eggs drop from birds in the newbish areas surrounding the cities. They may also be bought on occasion from Kopopo, or from the vendors on the airship docks: Albinie (H-6, Port San d'Oria) or Uli Pehkowa (M-7, Port Windurst). You must be rank 5 or higher to access the dock vendors.

POP QUIZ!!! <OK>
================================================================
Apple Pie (50) Yields 4 (BLM, RDM)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Cinnamon x1 (+)
Faerie Apple x1 (+)
Bird Egg x1
Maple Sugar x1 (+)
Pie Dough (+)

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 48-50 to advance to Culinary Journeyman.

Tips: Congratulations! You can now effectively make decent food for every job class in your experience parties. Make several Pineapple Juices, Meat Mithkabobs and Apple Pies; put them in your bazaar at competitive prices, and hang out near leveling areas (Selbina, Lower Delkfutt's Tower, Kazham).

MILESTONES:
HQ alert! You now have a decent chance of making Witch Kabobs (HQ Roast Mushrooms) given favorable conditions.
Your mages now get Apple Pie (48 & 50) in addition to all those juices. Hopefully, they get a pee break, too.
You can make Fish Mithkabobs (49), a good (but not excellent, nor inexpensive) tank food.

50-51 <OK>
================================================================
Orange Au Lait (51) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Honey x1 (+)
Saruta Orange x2 (+)
Selbina Milk x1 (+)

Use: Regenerates 1 hp every 3 seconds for 300 seconds (100 total)

Tips: Remember honey? Bees drop it, and you can make it. This recipe is another stepping stone to get you an important level for relatively cheap, while also providing an item that is legitimately useful. Take a low level melee job out to farm crystals, feed it a meat dish of some kind and use these Orange Au Laits to regenerate health points while you're fighting. You'll have very little down time.

51-55
================================================================
Beaugreen Sautee (55) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Beaugreens x1
Selbina Butter x1 (+)

Use: VIT-1, AGI+1, presumably for 3 hours. Pretty dang useless.

Tips: This is possibly the most painful recipe you will make during your entire cooking career. Make 'em, sell'em to NPC, and just remember... Yagudo Drinks are around the corner.... You can acquire the Beaugreens from Kopopo (you should definitely know who she is by now), or from a regional vendor from whichever city controls the Fauregandi region (you remember, don't you...the apple vendors?).

Stone Cheese (61) Yields 4
Stacks to 12

[Dark Crystal]
Selbina Milk x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)

Use: HP+3, INT-2. Used in a couple of obscure recipes.

Tips: This recipe, as noted above, caps at 61. You can carry it all the way to 60 if you want, before taking the guild test. But I'm assuming that you're drooling over the prospect of Yagudo Drinks, and so am only suggesting you devote a couple of levels to this, to make your odds of success a bit better on Yagudo Drinks. Yagudo Drinks are expensive and painful to have breaks on and cap at 60. So use this recipe to whatever level you feel most comfortable, then sell the results to an NPC and move on.

Yagudo Drink (60) Yields 1 (WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, PLD)
Does not stack

[Dark Crystal]
Buburimu Grape x3
Yagudo Cherry x1

Use: Regenerates 2 mp every 3 seconds for 180 seconds (120 total)

Tips: If you're a truly patient gardener, you can grow both of these fruits with fruit seeds. For the Yagudo Cherry: plant fruit seeds on Firesday, nourish with Fire Crystals both times the plant is ready to be fed. For the Buburimu Grapes: plant fruit seeds on Iceday, nourish with Ice Crystals both times the plant is ready to be fed. Or, you can take the easy route, and simply buy them from the regional vendor in whichever city controls the Kolshushu region (you know, the Mhaura Garlic vendors).

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 58-60 to advance to Culinary Cratsman.

Tips: You're on the verge of being able to create truly useful foods for a variety of jobs. At the point you take this test, the guild representative will inform you that if you choose to continue leveling within the Culinary Guild, you will not be able to pursue other crafts to as high a degree.

MILESTONES:
HQ alert! You now have a decent chance of making Steamed Crab (HQ Boiled Crab) given favorable conditions.
Yagudo Drinks (60) are the best MP Refresh drink in the game. Great for BCNM, Garrison, Avatar fights, etc.

Dhalmel Stew (70) Yields 1 (WAR:DD, MNK, THF, DRK, BST, RNG, SAM, NIN, DRG)

[Fire Crystal]
Cinnamon x1 (+)
Dhalmel Meat x1
Distilled Water x1 (+)
Mithran Tomato x1 (+)
Popoto x1
Rock Salt x1 (+)
San d'Orian Flour x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1 (+)

Use: STR+4, VIT+2, AGI+1, INT-2, Attack+25%, 3 hours...excellent melee DD food below level 40. Still very good up to about 50.

Tips: Popotos are found through a couple of different vendors, as they are considered native to various regions. Baehu-Faehu (the orange-vending Tarutaru around the corner from the Culinary Guild) carries them. As does Kupopo (most of the time). You can also get them from Evelyn (J-7, Port Bastok). I urge you to get your Dhalmel Meat the old fashioned way: torment Bull Dhalmels in Buburimu Peninsula (best drops in my experience, sometimes multiple meat from one mob), or their cousins in Tahrongi Canyon or the Altepa Deserts. Every melee damage dealer I have given this meat dish to, even up into level 40+ parties, loves Dhalmel Stew. Better than Meat Mithkabobs in many respects: a) cheap to make; b) available from the NPC vendor inside the Timbre Timbers for around 2500; c) +VIT instead of negative. They key downside is the non-stacking San d'Orian Flour required to make it. However, you'll find that that is a recurring problem with many recipes now that you're cooking with the elite, so suck it up and enjoy the rewards that come with your talent.

[Fire Crystal]
Distilled Water x1 (+)

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 68-70 to advance to Culinary Artisan.
HP+20, DEX-1, VIT+4, 30 minutes

Tips: Get the San d'Orian Grapes from Kupopo, Aveline or Corua (G-9, Southern San d'Oria).

MILESTONES:
HQ alert! You now have a decent chance of making Heart Chocolate (HQ Bubble Chocolate). Very good BCNM food.
HQ alert! Meat Mithkabob HQ synths are theoretically possible...HQ1 is 12 meat mithkabobs, HQ2 is 6 meat chiefkabobs and HQ3 is 12 meat chiefkabobs.
Melon Pie (62 & 64) keeps your nukers mean.
Dhalmel Stew (70) is an excellent 3 hour food for melee damage dealers.

Pear Au Lait (72) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Honey x1 (+)
Derfland Pear x2
Selbina Milk x1 (+)

Use: Regenerates 3 hp every 3 seconds for 300 seconds (300 total)

Tips: Though Derfland Pears can technically be obtained through gardening, just pray that somebody controls Derfland the week you need them to skill up. Derfland is made up of Pashhow Marshlands, Rolanberry Fields and their attendant dungeons. The regional NPCs are: Belka (E-7, Port Bastok), Pourette (J-9, Southern San d'Oria) and Taraihi-Perunhi (K-10, Windurst Woods).

72-75 <OK>
================================================================
Dhalmel Pie (75) Yields 4 (RNG)
Stacks to 12

[Fire Crystal]
Black Pepper x1
Coral Fungus x1
Dhalmel Meat x1 (+)
Pie Dough x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
San d'Orian Carrot x1 (+)
Selbina Butter x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1 (+)

Use: STR+4, VIT+1, AGI+2, INT-2, MND+1, Attack+25%, Ranged Attack+30%, 30 minutes...great Ranger food, very good melee food.

Tips: You may be tempted to whine about the accessibility of Coral Fungus, and then write it off because of expense at the AH. You may even be tempted to move on directly to Navarin. So let me offer some tips. Planting 10 grain seeds and nourishing with lightning crystals tends to yield about a stack of coral fungus for me, usually within 3 days. Also, start making friends with high-level players who have access to doozie regional vendors (I believe Promyvion mission 4+ allows access). They are said to sell from these vendors for about 800 each. As of this writing, you'll have to track down these vendors, as I can only confirm the presence of one in Bastok Mines. The Black Pepper is relatively easy to track down, as long as somebody controls Elshimo Lowlands (think pineapple regional vendors). Or you can garden it yourself: grain seeds nourished with earth crystals. The bonus here is that you might get lightning crystals, which tend to be more valuable than earth. And you'll be using those a bit later. Even if you can't take this recipe all the way to 75, either due to expense or (un)availability of ingredients, I urge you to make as much as you can. On Fairy, production cost runs somewhere around 6k per stack with recent inflation. Market value is 10k per stack. They're also great Ranger food for special fights like BCNM.

Navarin (77) Yields 1 (NIN)

[Fire Crystal]
Black Pepper x1 (+)
Distilled Water x1 (+)
Giant Sheep Meat x1 (+)
Mithran Tomato x1 (+)
Olive Oil x1
Popoto x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1 (+)

Use: HP+20, STR+3, AGI+1, INT-1, Attack+10%, Evasion+5, 3 hours...favored by low-level Ninjas

Tips: I have one key reason why I suggest you make this for as limited time as possible: it's basically a one-job food. And while you will indeed make a profit on them, and will eventually sell them all, 14 of the 15 job classes won't exactly be beating a path to your Mog House to get them. Make them to skill up, sell them at the Jeuno AH, and keep a few around for any NINs you want to feed. They won't fly out of your Bazaar or the Auction House, but they will most definitely sell. Anyway...one ingredient here is new to you...Olive Oil. I believe it is always sold by Aveline inside Raimbroy's Grocery, but is also available from Derfland regional vendors. (Remember those dang pears?)

Selbina Butter x1 (+)
Shall Shell x2

Use: MP+20, DEX+1, VIT+4, INT+1, Defense+25%, 3 hours...also known as Paladin Crack

Tips: I'm not going to tell you which regional vendors to get Bay Leaves from. Why? Because you should be growing them. Plant herb seeds on Watersday, nourish with water crystals. Harvest Bay Leaves and fire crystals. Win-win. Shall shells are dropped by pugils. Bet you wish you'd known about THIS recipe during your Valkurm and Qufim days. Frankly, I just buy them off the AH, espcecially the singles. I like knowing I'm giving a newb some extra gil. I still make plenty of profit. Want to guarantee the PLD keeps Cover on you, and you alone? Give them one of these, get your very own pet Paladin.

Bastore Bream x1
Black Pepper x1 (+)
Distilled Water x1 (+)
Popoto x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
San d'Orian Carrot x1 (+)
Selbina Milk x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1 (+)

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 78-80 to advance to Culinary Adept.
HP+10, DEX+3, MND-1

Tips: If you're lucky and the stars and conquest points are in proper alignment, you may be able to buy one of these inside the Timbre Timbers in Windurst Waters. You might be able to find one at the AH, as well. If not, break down, buy a single Bastore Bream from the Fishing Guild, and whip this up.

MILESTONES:
HQ alert! You now have a mild chance of making Apple Pie +1 (HQ Apple Pie). Odds will improve in another 10 levels.
You can now make Mushroom Risotto (74), a very good 3 hour WHM food. Somewhat expensive, but your economy might justify it.
You can now make Dhalmel Pie (75), an excellent food for RNG. It is also a good food for melee damage dealers.
You can also now make Navarin (77), a good NIN food.
Finally, you'll have any PLD in your party kissing your feet for Shallops Tropicale (80). Also good for other tanks.

[Water Crystal]
Honey x1 (+)
Pamama x2
Selbina Milk x1 (+)

Use: Regenerates 2 hp every 3 seconds for 600 seconds (400 total)

Tips: You're best off buying pamamas on the dock in Kazham for pretty cheap. Otherwise, you need an Elshimo Uplands vendor: Bonmaurieut (H-10, Port San d'Oria), Dhen Tevryukoh (I-6, Port Bastok) or Sattsuh Ahkanpari (M-4, Port Windurst).

81-82
================================================================
Emperor Roe (82) Yields 4
Stacks to 12

[Lightning Crystal]
Emperor Fish x1

Use: {Mithra Food} HP+8, MP+8, DEX+4, MND-4...key ingredient of Flint Caviar.

Tips: Remember back at Dhalmel Pie when I told you to grow your own black pepper? Well, you should have some lightning crystals in storage as a byproduct. As for the Emperor Fish, I suggest you buy it in the early AM in Jeuno, when Japanese fisherman have placed their wears on the AH. This fish caps at a very high level of fishing (92, I believe), so don't even entertain the thought of catching them yourself. On Fairy, they sell for about 5k each. And, if successfully synthed all the way down the line, one Emperor Fish equals one stack of Flint Caviar, the best BRD and BST food in the game. Make them, store them, move on.

Marron Glace (86) Yields 1 (SMN, BLM, WHM, RDM)

{{{BEGIN SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Grape Juice (50) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Dark Crystal]
San d'Orian Grapes x4

Use: Regenerates 2 mp every 3 seconds for 90 seconds (60 total)

Tips: You will likely only make Grape Juice for the sole purpose of using it in other recipes. Pineapple juice is cheaper for MP.

{{{END SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Use: MP+13%, base MP regen while resting +1, 3 hours

Tips: Get the Ronfaure Chestnuts from Corua (G-9, Southern San d'Oria). Frankly, barring ridulously expensive and esoteric recipes, this is the best SMN food in the game. It is also excellent for any mage with over 300 mp to start. I won't use anything else for my BLM and SMN. And on Fairy, I have found these to be quite profitable.

86-90
================================================================
Persikos Au Lait (91) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Water Crystal]
Honey x1 (+)
Persikos x2
Selbina Milk x1 (+)

Use: Regenerates 4 hp every 3 seconds for 600 seconds (800 total)

Tips: Bottom line, unless you are very patient and willing to experiment with gardening Tree Saplings, you're best off buying these from the AH whenever and wherever you can find them. Persikos Au Lait are the best HP regen drink in the game, and are excellent for any and all boss fights. Persikos are not available from any NPC.

POP QUIZ!!!
================================================================
Seafood Stew (87) Yields 1 (WAR:TANK, PLD, NIN)
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Black Pepper x1 (+)
Distilled Water x1 (+)
Gold Lobster x1
Gysahl Greens x1
Nebimonite x1
Popoto x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
Shall Shell x1 (+)

Use: Trade this item to the guild rep between levels 88-90 to advance to Culinary Veteran.
HP+20, DEX+1, VIT+5, Defense+25%, 3 hours

Tips: Gysahl Greens can be bought from any Chocobo Stables. The Gold Lobster can be bought from the Fishing Guild, if you're willing to pay the outrageous rates. Nebimonites are obtained only through fishing. Bottom line, you're probably best off making friends with a fisherman, or buying the stuff in the early a.m. from the Jeuno AH. These are excellent tank food, though I personally prefer Shallops Tropicale for PLD tanks.

MILESTONES:
HQ alert! You now have an excellent chance of making Witch Kabobs, and a very good chance of making Steamed Crab.
Pamama Au Lait (81): best HP regen drink in the game.
Emperor Roe (82): key ingredient for best BRD and BST food in the game.
Chamomile Tea (83): decent BRD and BST food.
Bream Risotto (84): alleged new stats: HP+40, DEX+6, AGI+3, MND-4, 3 hours.
Pumpkin Pie (85): similar to Apple Pie, but with 40 mp.
Yellow Curry (85): excellent food for melee damage dealers.
Marron Glace (86): excellent food for 40+ mages of all stripes.
Mushroom Stew (86): felt by some to be the best WHM food in the game.
Coeurl Sautee (87): Very good melee food, allegedly with some benefits for RNG.
Seafood Stew (87): excellent tank food.
Rolanberry Pie (90): most MP of any pie (MP+50).

90-92
================================================================
Flint Caviar (92) Yields 3 (BRD, BST)
Stacks to 12

[Dark Crystal]
Emperor Roe x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)

Use: HP+10, MP+10, DEX+4, MND-1, CHR+4

Tips: Either keep this for your own BRD and BST, sell it for decent profit, or use it to make...doozie SALAD!!!

BONUS
================================================================
doozie Salad (92) Yields 1 (PLD, WAR:TANK, NIN)
Does not stack

[Wind Crystal]
Apple Vinegar x1
Bastore Bream x1 (+)
Beaugreens x1 (+)
Flint Caviar x1 (+)
Frost Turnip x1 (+)
Grimmonite x1
Noble Lady x1
San d'Orian Carrot x1 (+)

Use: HP+20, MP+20, DEX+4, VIT+6, AGI+4, CHR+4, Defense+??%, 3 hours. Best tank food in the game. Hands down.

Tips: You can make the apple vinegar yourself, or buy it. (You're a grown-up chef now, you can look it up.) As for the Grimmonite and Noble Lady...better make that fishing friend of yours fast. Or hit the AH in the early morning. Because the ingredients are not cheap, nor easy to come by, my friend. But on the upside, you can afford them now.

92-93
================================================================
Coeurl Sub (93) Yields 6 (RNG)

Mithran Tomato x1 (+)
Coeurl Sautee x1

{{{BEGIN SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Coeurl Sautee (88) Yields 1
Does not stack

[Fire Crystal]
Olive Oil x1 (+)
Coeurl Meat x1
Grape Juice x1 (+)
Selbina Butter x1 (+)
Black Pepper x1 (+)
Wild Onion x1 (+)
Rock Salt x1 (+)
Honey x1 (+)

Use: STR+5, AGI+1, INT-2, Resist Stun, Attack+20%, Ranged Attack+32%, 3 hours

Tips: This in and of itself is excellent RNG food. However, I prefer to roll it over into the Coeurl Sub sandwiches. Coeurl meat is - surprise! - dropped by the coeurl family. Find them in Meriphataud Mountains, Sauromugue Champaign, the jungles outside of Kazham, Attohwa Chasm, Sanctuary of Zi'Tah and other much scarier places. I buy the meat from the AH, personally, and try not to think of it as cat meat.

{{{END SUBSIDIARY RECIPE}}}

Use: MP+10, STR+5, AGI+1, INT-2, HMP+1, Resist Stun, Attack+20%, Ranged Attack+32%, 30 minutes.

Tips: Buy Crying Mustard from Benaige inside Raimbroy's Grocery. Sandy has been in last place recently on Fairy, and he still has the mustard. Techically, you can make your own White Bread (44), but don't bother. You'll HQ it half the time. And the HQ version (Pain de Neige) is useless. It can't be used in any recipes. So buy your White Bread from: Glyke (F-7, Upper Jeuno), Boncort (F-8, Northern San d'Oria), Croumangue (G-7, Port San d'Oria), Shilah (K-6, Southern San d'Oria), or from Kupopo on rare occasions. As for the Coeurl Sautee...make it yourself, of course.

Just as an fyi...it took me approximately 30 synths to advance the one level, from 92 to 93.

CONCLUSION
================================================================

Of course, you can keep going to 100. Tonosama rice balls will get you to 94, and the new doozie Tacos (think salad, but yielding six 30-minute versions) are said to cap at 97. But why bother, until you have a few level 70+ jobs? It's time for you to take a break, maybe start working on guild points (if you haven't started yet), and work toward getting that snazzy hat and apron. You can now make excellent food for any job in the game. And once you get your Raw Fish Handling key item from the guild, you can explore an even wider array of useful recipes.

From here on, if you apply yourself for a couple hours a day, you'll likely be able to make 100,000 gil or more in PROFIT per day. (Personally, I devote about 9-12 hours a week toward cooking.) My personal best was 304,000 gil profit in one day from 539,000 in sales.

And remember...you now have the clout to start your own party, regardless of job, just by virtue of the fact that you can fully cater. If you cook it, they will come.
