Desynthing is one of the most fickle of crafting abilities. It is also one of the most profitable.
Most items can be desynthed into its base ingredients. HQ results are what those specializing in Desynthing are aiming for most of the time. There are certain exeptions to this rule and they will be listed next to the item's description.
Desynthing is most often successful when facing the correct direction and on the correct day. The days that are best for desynthing are the same day of the crystal. This limits the amount of breaks. While the direction you face helps the HQ results. Moon phase doesn't seem to have too much of an effect, although new/waning moons are generally accepted as best times for desynthing.
Usually each item will have one base result and 1-3 HQ results. The most reliable way to get a desynth is when you are no more than 10 skill levels above the desynthing cap. This helps keep the amount of failures at a minimum. The items I have listed below cap out below 50. This allows you to be able to desynth from multiple crafts consistantly without worrying about going over 60.
Now, without further ado-
GTs Desynthing for fun and profit.
Ingredient: Yagudo Necklace Skill: Smithing Skill Cap: 1 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: SW Result: Copper Ingot HQ1: n/a HQ2: n/a HQ3: n/a Desciption: This is one of the few desynths with only one result. If you farm your own necklaces you will get the highest profit.
Ingredient: Yagudo Necklace Skill: Clothcrafting Skill Cap: 1 Crystal: Wind Direction to face: E Result: Grass Thread x3 HQ1: Grass Thread x6 HQ2: Grass Thread x9 HQ3: Grass Thread x12 Desciption: This recipe is a good way to get a lot of grass threads really cheap.
Ingredient: Flute Skill: Woodworking Skill Cap: 1 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: SW Result: Parchment HQ1: Parchment HQ2: Maple Lumber HQ3: Maple Lumber Desciption: This is one recipe where the HQ is worth less than the regular result. Flutes are very cheap from NPCs and will turn out a nice profit.
Ingredient: Antican Robe Skill: Clothcrafting Skill Cap: 10 Crystal: Wind Direction to face: E Result: Cotton Cloth HQ1: Cotton Cloth x2 HQ2: Cotton Cloth x3 HQ3: Cotton Cloth x4 Desciption: Antican robes go for a varying amount on the AH. On my server the prices go from 1-2k depending on the time of day. You can also farm these from Antican Faber (Altepa Eastern Desert), Antican Funditor (Altepa Eastern Desert), Antican Sagittarius (Altepa Eastern Desert), Antican Speculator (Altepa Eastern Desert), Antican Essedarius (Altepa Western Desert), Antican Retiarius (Altepa Western Desert), Antican Signifer (Quicksand Caves), Antican Aedilis (Quicksand Caves), Antican Quaestor (Quicksand Caves), Antican Praetor (Quicksand Caves), Antican Proconsul (Quicksand Caves), and Antican Tribunus (Quicksand Caves).
Ingredient: Gigas Socks Skill: Alchemy Skill Cap: 15 Crystal: Fire Direction to face: W Result: Poison Dust x2 HQ1: Poison Dust x4 HQ2: Poison Dust x6 HQ3: Poison Dust x8 Desciption: This one is our first Alchemy desynth. Best profit is by farming them from Gigas Stonemason (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonecarrier (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonegrinder (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Foreman (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonemason (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Wildkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Wallkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Hallkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), and Jotunn Gatekeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower).
Ingredient: Tonberry Coat Skill: Clothcrafting Skill Cap: 17 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Linen Thread x2 HQ1: Linen Thread x4 HQ2: Linen Thread x6 HQ3: Linen Thread x8 Desciption: Most people don't want to farm Tonberries because of the nasty side effect of the more you kill the more damage you take from Throat Stab. These coats go for 1-2k on my server, depending on time of the day.
Ingredient: Goblin Helm Skill: Smithing Skill Cap: 19 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Bronze Ingot HQ1: Iron Ingot HQ2: Steel Ingot HQ3: n/a Desciption: This desynth can net a really great profit if you can get the Iron or Steel ingots consistantly. You can also farm these from pretty much any goblin wearing heavy armor (Butchers, Tinkers, ect.) for a really good profit.
Ingredient: Goblin Mail Skill: Smithing Skill Cap: 21 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Bronze Ingot x2 HQ1: Iron Ingot x2 HQ2: Steel Ingot HQ3: n/a Desciption: Another really profitable Smithing desynth from an easily farmable item. Just like the Helms, you can obtain them from any heavy armor wearing goblins.
Ingredient: Goblin Mask Skill: Alchemy Skill Cap: 21 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Glass Fiber x2 HQ1: Glass Fiber x4 HQ2: Glass Fiber x6 HQ3: Glass Fiber x8 Desciption: Another good profit desynth. This is also a good way to cheaply obtain Glass Fiber for later alchemy synths. The Masks drop from any of the backpack wearing Goblins.
Ingredient: Tonberry Coat Skill: Clothcrafting Skill Cap: 22 Crystal: Wind Direction to face: E Result: Linen Cloth HQ1: Linen Cloth x2 HQ2: Linen Cloth x3 HQ3: Linen Cloth x4 Desciption: Another Tonberry Coat desynth. This one can also be very proitable the more you can HQ it.
Ingredient: Shell Shield Skill: Bonecrafting Skill Cap: 23 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Giant Femur HQ1: Giant Femur HQ2: Giant Femur HQ3: Turtle Shell Desciption: Our first profitable Bonecraft desynth. Shell Shields are always cheap off the AH and drop very frequently from Young Quadavs. Femurs usually sell for the same price as the shields, but the turtle shells are usually worth twice as much.
Ingredient: Silver Ring Skill: Goldsmithing Skill Cap: 32 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Silver Ingot HQ1: Silver Ingot HQ2: Silver Ingot x2 HQ3: n/a Desciption: Wow, talk about profit! You can get rings from 1-1.2k off the AH or even NPCs, and they turn into ingots worth 2k each or 28k a stack.
Ingredient: Gigas Socks Skill: Clothcraft Skill Cap: 35 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Wool Thread x2 HQ1: Wool Thread x4 HQ2: Wool Thread x6 HQ3: Wool Thread x8 Desciption: Another desynth involving these smelly socks. This one is very profitable and actually a good way to cheaply make Wool Cloth. These are dropped from Gigas Stonemason (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonecarrier (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonegrinder (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Foreman (Korroloka Tunnel), Gigas Stonemason (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Wildkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Wallkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), Jotunn Hallkeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower), and Jotunn Gatekeeper (Delkfutt's Upper Tower).
Ingredient: Bugbear Mask Skill: Leathercrafting Skill Cap: 35 Crystal: Wind Direction to face: E Result: Ram Leather x3 HQ1: Ram Leather x3 HQ2: Ram Leather x3 HQ3: Gold Thread x2 Desciption: Holy moly, talk about profit from a cheap item! These masks sell for about 500gil on my server and can turn into some nice items. They can also be farmed from Bugbears in Movapolos.
Ingredient: Mythril Ring Skill: Goldsmithing Skill Cap: 47 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Mythril Ingot HQ1: Mythril Ingot HQ2: Mythril Ingot x2 HQ3: n/a Desciption: Another nice ring desynth. Rings are great to desynth because they sell for less than the cost of just one of the ingots used to make it.
Ingredient: Silver Bangles Skill: Goldsmithing Skill Cap: 49 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Silver Ingot HQ1: Silver Ingot HQ2: Silver Ingot x2 HQ3: Silver Ingot x3 Desciption: This desynth can be very profitable if you can consistantly obtain 2-3 ingots at a time.
Ingredient: Quadav Helm Skill: Smithing Skill Cap: 49 Crystal: Lightning Direction to face: S Result: Bronze Ingot HQ1: Iron Ingot HQ2: Steel Ingot HQ3: Darksteel Ingot Desciption: This one is a crazy profit synth. Very cheap on the AH and drops regularly off of Old Quadavs in Beadeaux.
I hope this guide helps anyone, reguardless of skill to successfully desynth for profit!

"when facing the correct direction"; i never knew this made a difference.. haha .. thats funny .. are you sure this really makes a difference, or is it just some kind of superstition you carry based on coincidences of past experience? If you are sure that the direction you are facing changes the result rate, could you please explain how? Like what days, what direction. Thanks~

Posted below is a picture of the guide I use.
It may sound silly, but the directions really do matter. I have done tests. So have my friends.
One example- A friend of mine was about 5 levels below the skill cap for desynthing shell shields. When he faced "random" directions he would get more breaks and no HQs. When he faced the direction for Lightning Crystal HQ/Skillgains he was getting the Turtle Shell 1/3 of the time. Breaks were about the same. He was also gaining very well and actually made profit off of the desynth.
Now, this is by no means a scientific experement, but many people have experienced great results with this method as well. This method was first posted onother website and was discussed in great detail by other crafters.
Here's the picture I use. There is also another picture posted here on the boards that goes in much more detail. I personally think less is more.

From doing over 7000 black ink synths I must say that compass is a big load of bull.
(About half the time I face west while synthing, half the time I face northeast, there's no difference in total profit. Noone who synths along with me ever face northeast and they have same hq/fail rate as me at same skill.)
It might affect desynthing though, eventhough I've done a lot of desynthing it's been too spread out to take statistics.

This may not seem very scientific, (Since when is FFXI scientific ) but I've done huge runs of silver ingots and post 20, I have never ever got a break on a silver ingot if I was facing the correct direction and avoided crafting on watersday. I have gotten breaks 1/10-15 times when facing the direction for skillgain/HQs.
There are some things we don't understand in FFXI. Take planting for example. There are proven formulas for getting certain items, yet even if you follow the instructions exactly you will get crap instead of what you wanted.
No matter what, there will always be an element of randomness, no matter how proven something is or is not.

Another great Desynth is this,
Skill: Leather Craft
Cap: 15 (I think)
Buy leather belts from the store next to the tanners guild in Sandoria, desynth using lightning crystal.
Normal: Sheep Leather
HQ: Sheep Leather
HQ2: Iron ingot
HQ3: 2 x Iron Ingot
This is great if u do smithing, can cut down costs of stacks of iron ingots, which i think are about 40k a stack, and I think these belts sell for a couple hundred gil each from the npc.

This one is not really an entirely profitable synth unless you farm your own masks completely.
On my server the masks are more expensive than leather.

Thanks a bunch. I think I completely forgot about that one.
I swore I put that one up there.
The cap is 13 and the belts are sold between 391-442gil depending on fame. If you farm your own crystals this can be a profitable desynth with regular HQs.

Thanks for that chart. I have done some Test myself with Gardening and the days Have allot to do with your results. Its the difference between getting 18 fire crystals or getting 45 fire crystal out of one harvest. Also try making things on the days the shop is closed Holy !@#$%^&* does that suck. I had to learn that the hard way.
I never heard about the direction to face but I'm pretty sure it will work. And it doesnt hurt to try anyway.

What determines the level you can safely desynth an item at? I've always gone with the premise that I can safely do so if I am 10 lvls above the level the items caps at. Results have been positive, though I have gotten breaks.
