I've been able to solo with DNC | NIN | BLM | SMN though it's really slow with the last two.

BLM is fast most of the time if you know what you're doing. (It's as much where to go as anything else). 51+ you can get at least 2k/hour at all times, and if you're good noticeably more.
You also need to be a Tarutaru. I know people will hate this, but solo, pre-73, no other race even comes in the same league. The increased mp pool is vital.

I used to be a taru, switched to mithra because no one loves tarus unless you're a WHM. -.-;
