Humm... not sure if you guys have noticed but I seem to catch more fish but get less skill up after the recent patch, altho they made fishing a lil more fun (and alot easier to bot) they did take away skillups it seems. I still get .1 or .2 here and there but before the per hr skill up ratio was a hell of alot easier. Just my 2 gil if anyone has more information as to how the patch affected fishing please share.

Make sure you skill on fish that is at most 15 harder than your current fishing skill. Apparently you'll get the most skill if it's withing 5 skill.
Also, I have gotten my new fishing mules from 0 to 8-9 in 3 days of fishing, aka 3x4 hours. That's certainly faster than before especially considering they catch 3 stacks or so of moat carp an hour.

That's really weird I'm currently fishing Tricolored and Gold carp in N. Gustaberg with Comp./Insect Ball level 20getting .1 or .2 once every 2 hours if that =/ my mule is 56 I remember it being alot less painful for some reason certainly dont doubt your word as I remember it being like that myself, just thought it had something to do with the patch. Macro I'm using is XUFish 3.5.3 with FFXI Insider everything runs great seems to catch fairly well just the skill up that well just wont go up... Maybe move to a different area? I've also tried salmon in Sandoria Ron. area and seems to be exactly the same according to fishing guides I'm not too far from where I should be but I might be wrong.

I had fishing at level 50 (with no work on it for... six months, at least) before the recent patch was added. It took me ages to get to 50 back then.
After the first day of the patch being implemented, I raised it to 58 in a little less than three hours. It's right now sitting at 70. So, I'd have to disagree with it being harder to skill up.
However, what I DID notice is that prices of Moat Carp went down by 2k at the Auction House since the patch came about. Not only that, but vendors started to buy Tricolored Carp and Gold Carp for half the prices they used to, which totally kills my old fishing strategy of "Donate all of your Moat Carp to get another LuShang's Fishing Rod, using the profits from the Tricolored and Gold carp to make more bait."
It sucks, but, I'll live with it.

my story as a low lvl fisher:
old System:
0-11 skill, 4 days at 8 hours a day running between Port Windy and Windy waters
New System:
11-20 skill, East Ron, Fly Lure, Comp. Rod... using new bot, took me about 12-15 hours and gotta say at least half of that was !@#$%^&* about with the new Anit Bot/Tiredness code they got.
It works differntly from the old code, i could fish for 4 hours in a row getting great great skill ups(about 3 lvls) in the last hour and shite loads of bites all the way though (no zoning or logging at all)
but after that 4 hours i couldnt get a bite for about 3 hours lol (that was even with a 6 hour logout and 2 hours standing in sandy so was 4 hours fishing, 5 hour break, no bites for 3 hours) but at other times i could fish for 45min and have bites stop and had to zone Five (5) times and change jobs to get bites back (west ron, south sandy, north sandy, port sandy, MH) so im confussed....

Couple of things that I've found while trolling around the fishing forums.
1. There seems to be a hard cap on the number of fish caught before JP midnight (200ish).
2. Fatigue can and will reset at JP midnight, I've tried it out myself and it works.
3. There is definately benefit to staying within 5 skill lvls for skilling up "faster". You will still get skillups if you target a fish 20 lvls above you but they will be much slower.
as I see more, relatively confirmed news, I'll continue to post.
Happy fishing

Ok so I made it to lvl 24 on this character finally thing that I notice on most (if not all) guides is that theres a hudge gap in between usually around 10 lvls I mean thats a relativly big gap, anyone have any ideas where I "should" be fishing at 24?

Uh, that's pretty easy:
Nebimonite to 27.
Dark Bass to 33.
Crystal Bass to 35 if you have the patience to sell it one and one on ah.
After that there's too many to pick from but I guess Nosteau Herring in Port Jueno won't hurt until 39.

Ahh cool that seems to be working well 2 more lvls added now only been fishing about 2 and a half hrs. Thanks Asl you should write a detailed guide with maybe a 3-5 lvl gap from one spot to another it would really help.
