FFXI is everything WoW isn't:
- it has a storyline that doesn't suck
- it is challenging
- it doesn't focus on raids at max level
- it allows you to level multiple classes on one character
- it does not provide instant gratification
And it has like nothing in common with FF7/8 beside spells and classes. All the gameplay is different.
I like it better than wow but your mileage may vary. I recommend reading the 1up guide to the game to understand what it's like:
http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3149797&did=1
It's written by an actual long time player of the game, 1up has pretty good coverage unlike for example ign.

ffxi has a lot of depth and is very complicated. its a party based game so you cant solo very often except the first 10ish levels unless you go BST. the gfx are much less toonish than wow. there is no PVP unless you go into ballista which is a set time when you and fight eachother in a match against groups.
this game really is not like any of the ffxigames. there are 3 main citys/alegiences. Bastok, San d'Oria, and Windurst. There is no raids but there are NM's. raids are like nm's. they are a random spawn in the case of lower level nm's and the higher level ones are forced spawn for you and an alliance to fight (can be a 10 min fight and can be up to a 2 hr fight), can be a 21-24 hour spawn, and it can be a 3-5 day spawn.
now for pictures of the citys i would say look in a place like alla for screenshots, more likely killingifrit

I played wow for a bit. Got bored with it after a few months and got tired of putting up with fools. It seemed like every 6th grader in the world was following me around. Constantly lieing to you so they seem better to their online friends and trying to steal or scam you every single time they talk they are in ffxi too, but I have done pretty good at avoiding these idiots. My friend that started playing wow at the same time as me but he continued playing ... he has everything he could ever want in that game right now. He has been trying to get me to come back to it but I never liked it. He offered me something like 5000 gold a couple weeks back to start up another account on the same server as him. I know I have not played in a while but that was a lot of gold then. ...
In ffxi, I only have a few jobs @ lvl 75 and still no where near getting all the gear and questing everything possible. My friend came over to ffxi but only lasted a month because it took to much work for him to stay interested.
Give it a try ... be warned its more addicting that wow or any other online game was for me

FFXI is a real good game. I like it beacuse i can just level my crafts at level one, untill i max out my craft. I have so much i can do with this game.
Its worth every penny to me.
I do what most people dont like, But I get to play for free so thats all that matters to me.
When our linkshell learder was talking about starting a small online business for the game most of us just laugh at him, but he seems to be doing pretty well.
I like his idea so he asked if i would like to help him and a few of the other linkshell members, so i started helping and he has already made me $48.00, so Im able to play for free for a while.
I say go for it. you can get accounts for sell low level no level to hi level. I have one but i cant say ill sell it to you here.
if you have broadband you can download evey bit of it, i have all the Expantions, other then the new one. but this service is for broadband only.
Tault_Admin remove this if i did some thing wrong.
FFXISM Staff.

FFXI is a long-term game. Some people try to play it like WoW, logon for 30minutes and try to accomplish something. That doesnt exactly happen.
A lot of people will get a job to 60 in wow in around a month, but few will get a job to 75 in a month. This isnt to say that FFXI is ONLY for hardcore gamers, because I dont think it is. I'm just stressing that its a long-term fun commitment.
In WoW you may find yourself with a lot of different options of things to do that wont take very long. In FFXI you dont have as many options, but your few options will take a long time.
WoW is very unlike FFXI in the fact that it isnt as party-based for XP. FFXI is all party based. Even the solo jobs like to party. Soloing is also a lot rarer as a general act, but quite common for some jobs.
Some people prefer WoW because group setup isnt as important, but I favor FFXI to WoW because everything is based on setup and skill, not just key mashing.
If you prefer soloing, you dont necessarily need to play WoW to get it, FFXI offers it in certain jobs. THF NIN BST RDM are the best soloers, but many jobs are decent at it. Even BRD/NIN can shine if played correctly. WHM/NIN is also a formidable soloer.
My MAIN piece of advice for a new player to FFXI is to not give up. The beginning of the game can seem really lame, but even just getting to jeuno may cause u to want to keep playing. Ive had friends start, say how !@#$%^&* the first 10 levels were, then get to around lv 15, and never want to stop playing.
Good luck with FFXI if you choose it.

QFT! I've tried to quit this game before and couldn't. Its is quite alot of fun but can be a little draining at times with the grinding and what not.

If you want to join a game that has abunch of people claiming they can't speak english or ignor you because they assume you are english and haveing to wait hours to even days to accomplish something. Going around trying to make money to progress in the game, and have a bunch of people b!tchin' at you for trying to help them or for no reason at all. Then this sure is the game for you. To most people its sad to find that this game is addicting because it is a long term game that relies on many people.
On the bright side it does have some good qualities that other MMOs don't have, and anyone will find this game hard at times. But, only way to really know is if you tried. You get a months free trial to test it. Over all though its not a bad game and probally one of the best MMOs you will enjoy.

This game is CRACK
No other game will give you dreams. You look at things and think about the game.
You get mad and curse at the computer. GO to sleep Piss off and then wonder why in the hell you are mad in the 1st place.
Ohhh and once you get use to the game try to quit. You will actually get withdrawls from the game. You will never look at a comp the same way again

If your attitude is anything like this, then FFXI isn't for you

Its still true that people act like that on the game. I had this game since release and most of the people I started this game with quite long before me.
