FFXI FISHING MADE EASY
leetdemon Edition
This is a post fishing update patch fishing guide.
LEVEL: 0-4
Target Fish: Crayfish(7), Moat Carp(11), Gold Carp(56)
Location: Windurst Woods, Windurst Waters, Windurst Walls
Bait: Little Worm
Rod: Carbon, Composite, or Mithran
Carbon - will not get you as many fish too small messages, it is rare but it can break at this skill level.
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Mithran - Very sturdy rod, Expensive. Will still get some fish to small messages, Mithran wears a fish's stamina Down extremely Fast.
Description:
I did this from 0-4 with great skill gain you can do this all the way to level 7 if you wish as thats when crayfish stop giving exp. Gold carp are high level so the likely hood of you actually pulling one in is slim but you will still get exp off the bites.
LEVEL: 4-11
Target Fish: Moat Carp(11), Gold Carp(56),Tricolored Carp(27)
Location: Port San D*oria
Bait: Insect Paste
Rod: Composite or Mithran
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Mithran - Very sturdy rod, Expensive. Will still get some fish to small messages, Mithran wears a fish's stamina Down extremely Fast.
Description:
This is what I did from level 4 - 11, Skill up was nice and steady and you can make money off the moatcarp you catch or you can turn them in for lushang quest.
LEVEL: 11-20
Target Fish: Cheval Salmon(21), Shining Trout(39)
Location: East Ranufare
Bait: Sinking Minnow or Fly Lure
Rod:Composite or Mithran
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Mithran - Very sturdy rod, Expensive. Will still get some fish to small messages, Mithran wears a fish's stamina Down extremely Fast.
Description:
Here I personally used the Mithran Rod as I found it got less too small messages, and as stated above it rocks at taking stamina away from the target fish Quickly. Skill up here was very fast i think i got three levels in a little over 3 hours. For bait here i used Sinking Minnow.
LEVEL: 20-31
Target Fish: Giant Catfish(31), Dark Bass(33), Red Terrapin(52)
Location: La Theine Plateau- South Eastern Pond(little one)
Bait: Frog Lure
Rod: Mithran
Mithran - Very sturdy rod, Expensive. Will still get some fish to small messages, Mithran wears a fish's stamina Down extremely Fast.
Description:
Skill up here is kind of slow for a while until you get to around level 25 then it picks up as you start getting more hits from the higher fish and begin to actually catch them on a regular basis.
LEVEL: 31-45
Target Fish: Ogre Eel(35), Gold Lobster(46), Zalmug Bass(40), Bastore Bream(85)
Location: South Gustaburg
Bait: Sinking Minnow
Rod:Composite
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Description:
For me fishing got fun here, I loved the way i was pulling in a variety of fish now and I seemed to be able to fish longer without the fatigue system ending my fishing for the day.Skill up here is slow but steady i was getting between .5 and .8 a hour usually sometimes more depending on moon phase.
LEVEL: 45-55
Target Fish: Bluetails(55), Bastore Bream(85)
Location: East/West Sarubartha
Bait: Minnow
Rod:Composite
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Description:
Here I personally used the Mithran Rod as I found it got less too small messages, and as stated above it rocks at taking stamina away from the target fish Quickly. Skill up here was very fast i think i got three levels in a little over 3 hours. For bait here i used Sinking Minnow.
LEVEL: 55-56
Target Fish: Moat Carp(11), Gold Carp(56)
Location: Windurst Woods, Windurst Waters, Windurst Walls
Bait: Insect Balls
Rod: Carbon, Composite, or Mithran
Carbon - will not get you as many fish too small messages, it is rare but it can break at this skill level.
Comp rod - Will never break. does not wear a fish's stamina out fast at all and gets too many fish to small messages
Mithran - Very sturdy rod, Expensive. Will still get some fish to small messages, Mithran wears a fish's stamina Down extremely Fast.
Description:
Again we are back to windy for Gold Carp Skill up is pretty quick here so getting this level should only take a few hours. You also will pull in moat carp again which you can either sell for gil or use for lushang.
The fatigue system is a pain in the but now you can only catch 200 fish a day max before it kicks in. The only way i have personally found to reset this is to wait it resets at midnight japan time or 10am EST.
I hope you enjoy this guide and it helps you all.

Thanks for posting this!
I do have a question about it, though. I'm currently working at leveling up my fishing. I'm 14-point-something and am fishing for Cheval Salmon in e. Ronfaure.
However, I'm finding that the only way I'm able to catch salmon, much less trout is with a Hume rod. Mithran and Composite both give me alot of trouble and the only thing I've been able to successfully reel in have been copper rings O.o
With the Hume rod, I'm catching them with pretty good consistency. However, that presents the second dilemma... skill up rate. I'm using a fly lure in all cases.
I caught easily 1.5 stacks worth of fish between the salmon and trout but did not even get .1 skillup in that time.
I'm wondering if there's some trick to this or have they just seriously slowed down the fishing skillups since the new system? I got fishing to 14 on the old system, for reference.
I'm also wearing full fishing gear if that's any help..
Thanks.

Fishing skill ups definitely slow down the higher your level gets. Try using mithran and sinking minnow. see how that does for you

Take your lil self and a rabiki rig to the pond in quifim island, set up on the ice with a cup of coffee and catch Yellow Globes to your hearts content ^^ this is only good from lvl11 till lvl 17 but if you are in a party in quifim, you will reap the benifits, and the crowds luv it!
