Don't worry about gil too much. Would be helpful if you could say what level you were though.

If your 1-10, just save up those crystals (always have signet on), and sell them for mega bucks (well..sort of). You don't need to spend much for these levels. Basic gear is fine. try to buy only from npc shops.

At 10 you start having to pay for your gear. That said, the basic gear doesn't cost much, so don't worry too much. Also at 18 you will level a sub job, which will make you more gil from crystals.

If you need more, try leveling some more jobs up to 10 or so. Kill Crawlers or Bees if possible while doing this for gil (Silk thread and Beehive Chips are ok gil).

Gil isn't really a problem for BLMs until much higher. you don't need to upgrade gear often, and there is usually a cheap option out there, such as Black stuff (npc shop in jeuno), Seers (cheap off ah) and so on.

If you want to be noticed for having good gear, you're going to need to spend ages farming, use bots, or buy gil.

Just try to remember that you don't have to be strong to make money. Just find your niche and work at it.

farming crystals is good for low levels and so are beehive chips and silk thread. I didn't need much gear for blm until it came time to buy seers equips and even then they are not that expensive.

Since you are a mage you could do this. Once you get your subjob quest completed, level warrior to 4. Thats it lvl 4 ... higher if you want but this all thats needed here. Then level monk 1 - 9, the entire time killing Easy Prey. At these low levels, a mnk/war can kill things literally in seconds and usually take little to no damage. You can carry a few au lauts on you for small amounts of HP regen if needed but it doesn't take long to rest back 150 HP. As long as you kill easy prey, you will get crystal drops. You could continue past level 9-10 but things aren't as easy to solo anymore. This is what I did for farming crystals back when i first started. Even still use it today for farming dark crystals from mushroom-frogs south of tele-holla. If you level up and your mobs are no longer Easy prey but now too weak (won't drop crystals) you can kill yourself over and over to loose exp and de-level ... then just start over again ^^. My mnk has been lvl 6-9 many many times lol. Since I made a lot of my gil in my pre-sea and sky days by selling yagudo drinks, its best for me to farm my own crystals. 12 dark crystals cost about 6-7k and the drinks sell for 2-4k most of the time. 2k profit off each one if you buy ingredients from regional npc ... more if you farm them / grow them yourself.

All methods take time and determination. If you don't have time to give up for farming a few hours a week, you will never have gil unless its given to you or you buy gil online.

goodluck! and welcome to FFXI ^^

Yeah - Crystals are your best bet tbh.

BLM isn't really expensive until 51 I've found (pre 51, you won't need more than a million gil or so of kit to be 'good', after 51 you'll need 3 times that, and to be very good 100 times. (on my expensive server - Hades))

RNG is also excellent for farming the crystals. If possible, level in San D'Oria. Fort Ghelsba drops own for this. Orcs = Fire Crystals :-), Funguars = Dark and Sleepshrooms :-). Leveling from 1-10 can make you as much as 250K if you know what you're doing.

I have found SMN to be an extremely powerful job for solo'ing as well. Carbuncle is an {Impossible To Guage} Tank. (Come on - level 10 smn's Carbuncle vs level 7 mobs taking 0 - 3 per hit...insane...)
