FFXI GUIDE
Groups are something that you should fall into around level 13-15. Before these levels comparable experience can be found elsewhere.
My personal Favorite for Bastok 9-13 is (though I admit it gets slow during the later levels) is the Fumaroles in South Gustaberg for several reasons. One! All those sweet spawns! The land crabs have defence but generally I find they deal out less damage than the Maneating Hornets. However! (and this leads so conviently into #2) The items they drop! It won't make you rich quick, but it is an early boost to money WHILE your are gaining some experience. The Land Crabs from Crab Meat which can sell nicely, Rock Salt (a stack of 12 might go for 500). The Maneating Hornets drop the big bucks Beehive Chips. A stack can sell for 3k on good weeks and about 2.5 on bad weeks. Honey is also an added bonus about about 1.5k a stack. When I was powering through those levels I got about 30k all in all including the Wind and Water crystles dropped. That's a lot of cash for so early in the game. Plenty to start some of the nice Gill making strats outlined here.
Coming off the gill ride that was the Fumaroles I found myself scared and shivering in the Highlands. Now, at first I was sad to see the landcrabs and hornets go... That is untill the sun shown over the hills and windmills and I saw all the Wasps and Strollign Saplings. That's right folks, Earth and Wind Cs, Beehive chips, Honey, and now Grain/Veg/Treant bulb/seeks (which if you get a stack of 12 Veg seeds you find yourself sitting on 5k or so).
That track got me 14 and ready to get all the armor/weapons I could dream of.
Now! Here comes the troublesome part. Now, onto the meat! Groups Groups Groups! Much like in any other MMORPG a group can make or break you. Go into Valkrum Dunes and try to find yourself one of the entrance groups. Generally if you put up a flag and sit by the guard you'll get in a group more sooner than later.
Or! *Trumpet fanfair* Start your own!
I found myself with a dire need of healers! Oh no! What to do what to do. Do NOT discredit Red Mages! Some of the greatest "rag tag" groups I have ever been in have been 3 Warriors 2 Red Mages and some other support class.
Now, my reccomendation for groups is as follows -
1. Sometimes one person who is 3 levels higher than the rest of the group can be acceptable and not cut TOO much experience, but watch it. It can and WILL lower exp.
2. Healers - As stated above don't discredit Red Mages. Sometimes one can do a job for light/medium pulls. If your in a heavy quick pull group you'll probably need two. Now, somethong to keep in mind. I always keep 2 spots in mind for healers in my imaginary groups. One, I would always want to be a White mage. Protect, Shell, Poisona, and Curaga are assets you don't want to leave behind. Two, I want a Red mage (that sounds Crazy I know, but hear me out). They can silence. If your fighting Leechers in the Dunes. Silence has the possibility to save your life. Or if it presses, 2 Red Mages. Watch it though, no Poisona which means no lizards. Plague Breath will KILL you.
3. Melee - Don't under estimate the mellee. Without good Tanks/damage dealers a party is up the creek without a paddel. Now, I personally prefer at LEAST 2 Provoking classes (and untill subjobs are a factor that means 2 Warriors) and a possible Monk/Thief. You will always want 2 provoking Mellee because I feel the most important aspect of the mellee experience is a Provoking Order. Before you get into a luring/pulling stream create a provoking order. This will ensure that two Provokes won't be used and dueing the time it takes them to pop again that darned enemy won't mosey on over and make your healer dinner. This way one provokes and waits 10 or so secs and then the other. If you have three, even better.
Monk/Thief. Good and Good. Monk can take and deal damage and are GREAT for Skill chains. Thief is a personal favorite of my own, and if your on a subjob quest out in t he dunes always keep one handy. Treasure Hunter will save time and gray hair not to mention the added Sneak Attack damage combined with weapon skills.
4. Alternates - Leave a spot open for Black Mage! Snippers can and will raise their defence which will most likely leave mellee's useless for 1-2 rounds and it may do it more than just once. Black Mages can easily shell out a nice quick burst to leave any enemy dead in their tracks.
You will need a Damselfly Worm, a Magiked Skull, and a Crab Apron for your subjob. Don't get too excited more often than not you'll end up with a Crab Apron about level 16 and a Worm maybe around 17. The Skull is the mean thing. What I reccomend is to leave it to the 18s of the group. They will have been waiting longer than you, and hopefully when you get 18 you'll get first dibs. This is what happened to me and what I have done ever since.
In Valkrum I would stay around the entrance untill your 16 or so. Keep in a 4-6 person group and watch out for spawning mobs.
Warnings!
Hill Lizards will poison you - This can make the best group go bad.
Some people are still pretty green behind the ears at this point and will want to wonder around. Don't be mean, but DON'T let them. If your in a serious non-roaming group make sure to keep tabs on the young ones. If you can, take them out on some luring runs or even let them lure if you think they can handle it.
The most serious threat! Goblins!
The one thing you'll have to look for other than for massive dishing of damage is the Bomb Toss. This will make a mess. Keep the healers/support mage back as much as possible. Think of this. The goblin is attacking and the two melee are getting into the yellow quick. A bomb is thrown and brings them both to the red. Now, if the healers are too close they will be trying to get back/worried for their own health/ and trying to heal the warriors before they die. This is not good.
If they heal the warriors - Given the chance the over amount of healing will lure the goblin to the healer and possibly kill them before they can heal themselves.
Healing themselves - Warrior(s) may die and that means the end of the party.
Don't make a healer choose who lives and dies. Its not fun. They like everyone to live more often than not.
Move in around 16 past the tunnel and watch out for the immiediate death that Leechers/Muggers will pose at this level. Stay around the edge of the trees you see as you round the corner to the left after the tunnel. I reccomend going west of the trees and wait around the dip that marks the entrance into the rest of the zone.
Stay around there untill about 18, and at 18 feel free to move to the Outpost and look for a group. You can move out before 18 of course but watch yourself more roamers and higher groups can mean more death and less experience for you.
At level 20 head back to town or if you have the G. Grasses head to Jeuno. Watch yourself, its dnagerous. I reccomend finding a lvl 35 or above to accompany you.
FFXI WEAVING GUIDE
Okay this guide covers the cheapest way to level clothcraft from 1-50 and making money tips in the process. Good luck to all of you starting, and if at any point you can make money, I will indicate it with "&&&"
Level 0-2: wind crystal + 2x chocobo feathers = chocobo fletching x6
- You can buy the feathers from a chocobo stable for real cheap.
- Don't bother selling to AH just sell back to npc for small loss.
level 2-4 earth crystal + 3x spools of grass thread ---> grass cloth
- To get the grass thread use the recipe : yagudo neckalce + wind crsytal = 3x spools of grass thread.
- &&& If you farm yourself the yagudo necklaces (they drop from any level yagudo) you can actually make a nice profit; the cloth sells for 3-4k.
Level 4-8: grass cloth x2 + spool of grass thread +earth crystal --> cape
- Basically mass make these!
- Use lightning crystal to break down the capes and remake them with the ingredients you get back. Make sure you keep one for your guild test.
level 8-11 Saruto cottonx2 l+ lightning crystal = spool of cotton thread
- If you buy this from the guild or farm them yourselves you will make a very good income, as the stack of spools sells for 8k on my server.
-if you buy the Sar. Cottons from AH you will usually break even.
*** You may also choose to do Hachimakis : grass cloth x2 +wind crystal, make sure to desytnth them.*****
Level 11-14: Linen thread : flax flower x2 + lighting crystal
- this will break you even if you buy from AH.
Level 14-22: yagudo feathersx2 +wind crystal -> yagudo fletchings x6
- Leveling clothcraft you will love the fletchings recipes since they are cheap.
- This recipe starts to get slow at 20, but take it to 22 since its really cheap.
- Money will be lost at this recipe just suck it up.
&&& Depending on your server once you hit 22 you have reached the skill limit for fisherman's hose as well. This recipe can net you a nice 2000 GIL income per synth. I found it better to shout in Windurst for people needing the item, it usually get 5 tells (10k).
Level 22-28: chocobo feather + bat fang + animal glue +earth crystal--> fly lure
- Warning: this is an expensive part, but right afterward you will make back the gil you spent.
- This synth requires minimum level 4 boneworking, and will level boneworking to 8 as well as the clothcraft.
Level 28-34: Shinobi-Tabisx33 :Saruto Cotton + grass thread + cotton clothx2 + earth crystal
&&& Depending on your server, this will make a very very nice profit. A stack of 99 shinobi tabis sell for 8k at Jeuno on my server and the cost for one stack is : 3(100) + 3(400)+3(500) **These prices are based on my server : Garuda***** I actually kept making these synths past 34 for the extra cash cause you will need it.
There is now two methods to proceed:
a)
Level 34-37: Wool cloth: 3xspool of wool + earth crystal
- This synth will break even if you buy from AH.
- If you decide to, you can farm sheep skin (and camp Stray Mary at same time, like me)
and use the recipe: sheep skin x2 + wind crystal --> sheep wool (this is a level 0 synth).
This synth alone gets you income, and by turning those sheep wool into wool thread
( sheep wool x2 + lightning crystal--> spool of wool ) you will make a greater income.
Level 37-45: velvet cloth: 2x spool of wool + spool of silk + earth crystal
- This is a very fast skilling synth and depending on server you will break even - net loss of 3k GIL.
b) Level 32-42: Bird fletching x6: 2x bird feathers + wind crystal
- The reason why I've separated these two methods is because on my server a stack of bird feathers is 2k (used to be 100 GIL /sigh) and is a big loss. Unless your looking for fast & expensive skill ups, I wouldn't recommend this route.
Level 42-52: Insect Fletching x6: insect fletching x2 + wind crsytal
- This is another good synth (like shinobi-tabis). A stack of insects costs 600 gil and one stack of the fletching is 600.(...at San D'Oria and sell fast, or 1500 Gil at Jeuno) This are the best synth not only cause you make a tiny bit of cash but they are fast and get you to 52 for nothing. Enjoy the last fletching recipe for a while.
Level 52-62: Green Ribbon: silk cloth + wind crsytal
- These can be sold to NPC for 2k+ GIl (depending on fame so I suggest you max it).
- You will lose a bit of money per synth.
***A few extra notes:***
I suggest you level goldsmithing to 21 (net cost to lvl to 21 in gold is 0) to make more items for profit such as wool robe, gambison etc.
Woodworking also goes extremly well with Clothcraft (ie: beds).
So does smithing.
Once you hit high enough you can start making field equipment for a nice profit.
Now that SE has implemented the guild points alot of high level crafters buy out alot of low level ingredients or items. Take advantage of this, synth the items they need and set up bazaar and inflate the price, you'd be suprprised how high they'll pay!
This is a quick tip to get you to level 6 fame in Jeuno in about 1hour or less (assuming you have capital).
Melyon in Selbina will pay premium price for any of the following:
Five heads of La theine cabbage (100gil)
Three ears of millioncorn (120gil)
One clump of boyahda moss (600gil).
Grab 10 stacks of Boyahda Moss and go to Selbina and hand it in to Melyon. For every 1 you turn in, he will give you 600 gil and some fame San D'Oria and Bastok. This fame in turn boosts your fame in Jeuno since "All roads lead to Jeuno". You can only hand in 1 at a time. Total hand in time for 10 stacks is about 40 minutes and will bring your fame to 6 in Jeuno. You can check in Lower Jeuno with the NPC called Mendi outside the Magic shop.
The moss is often for sale for about 500-600 gil a piece in AH, so you might even break even on gil or turn a slight profit. 10 stacks of 12 costs roughly 72,000-75,000 and I remember making most of it back if not a slight profit. Now if you don't have the capital to do this all at once, then buy one or two stacks at a time until you have fame desired. After you attain fame 6, the returns are diminishing in that you don't get as much fame increase per stack as you used to.
If you can't find any moss in the AH, they are dropped from Goobues - the big grey/green looking monsters.
Ancient Goobbue - lvl 74-77 Boyahda Tree
Elder Goobbue - lvl 74-77 Boyahda Tree
Goobbue Lvl 22-25 Pashow Marshlands
Goobbue Farmer Lvl 28-32 Rolanberry Fields
Goobue Gardener Lvl 40-43 Zi'Tah Sancutary
Jolly Green Lvl 27-28 Pashow Marshlands
Old Goobbue Lvl 65-68 Boyahda Tree
FFXI & The Strange Apparatus Money-maker
Let me explain you how it works:
The machines passwords are based on algorythm, it means that it will works differentaly for each characters. Some people found out that it was working on the first 3 letter of your name( my name is "CHASTR" so it will work on "C","H","A").
1) So the first thing you will need is to find out the first 3 letters of your name^^.
2) Each letter has a number :
A=00 B=01 C=02 D=03 E=04 F=05 G=06 H=07 I=08 J=09
K=10 L=11 M=12 N=13 O=14 P=15 Q=16 R=17 S=18 T=19
U=20 V=21 W=22 X=23 Y=24 Z=25
3) Each machine has an element, and elements have numbers too:
Fire = 00
Earth = 01
Water = 02
Wind = 03
Ice = 04
Thunder = 05
Light = 06
Darkness = 07
-And here is how you will get your password:
Password = (First Letter + Machine Element) (Second Letter + Machine Element) (Third Letter + Machine Element) (Sum of three letters + (Machine Element * 4))
-And here I tell you the machine position and its element:
-Dangruf Wadi : Fire/Red : E-11
-Gusgen Mines : Earth/Brown : J-5 on 2nd map
-Ordelle's Caves : Wind/Green : E-12 on 2nd map
-Crawler's Nest : Water/Blue : J-8 on 3rd map
-Garliage Citadel : Light/White : J-8 on 3rd map
-Eldieme Necropolis : Ice/Blue : J-13 on 4th map
-Maze of Shakrami : Dark/Black : K-10 on 2nd map
-Outer Horotuto Ruins : Lightning/Purple : E-6 on 5th map
-After getting the password you status will be "Doctor" on the machine and it will ask you to trade:
A) an "Infinity Core" In the AH under Other then Misc. or can be gotten in the CoP expansion *
B) an "Elemental Chip": which can be gotten at the following locations in the major cities :
Blabbivix is at F-6 in Bastok Port. (He's at the farthest F-6 wall, back behind the last building)
Gaudylox is at F-4 in Sand'Oria North.
Scavnix is at H-4 in Windhurst Walls.
Buy a chip that corresponds to the correct element/color of the machine and area you're heading to
"Dangruf wadi" trade a red "Elemental Chip")
Note : You can only do this once a day on each machine (so 8 machines a day in non-Vana'Diel tim).
This works at a 100% you can get Rune weapons, Cermet chunks and much more random items if you got any questions send me a message.
To answer to some question for example with Fire machine (Dangruf Wadi) I get "00182038" with "Cha" ... Hope this helps you!
Here is the locations and correpsonding chip color/element that you need:to trade the machine along with an infinity core after you have "Doctor Status"
Dangruf Wadi Red Chip
Gusgen Mines Yellow Chip
Ordelles Caves Green Chip
Crawlers Nest Blue Chip
Garlaige Citadel White Chip
The Eldieme Necropolis Clear Chip

For example : I went to Dangruf Wadi with a level 50 friend at level 7 (if you have alts you can do it more than once a day) and had him cast sneak/invisible on me the whole way. I gave the machine my password, then traded it a Red Chip and an Infinity Core. It gave me 8xCermet Chunks...which go for 15k each on my server. I sold them for a profit of 50k. I paid 50k for the core and 21k for the chip... net profit : 50k in a run from Bastok Markets to Dangruf Wadi (10 mins or less).
Another further example : I went to Gusgen Mines afterwards, about a 10-15 minute walk from Dangruf Wadi, or a 5-10 minute choco ride from Bastok... I used a Yellow Chip and Infinity Core this time, getting 2 adaman nuggest in return. which is 100-120k on my server. So, profit was about 30k... I told someone about this who was a level 50smn/25whm and they sneaked/invisible'd me the whole way, I was level 7 at the time, so it is possible to do this with your mules or any low level character as well.
*FYI: Infinity Cores can also be gotten from CoP Bastok, Sandoria and Windhurst. (saves cash if you're high enough level to be there)
Good luck in your journeys,
FISHING GUIDE!
Level 1-6
Use any rod with little worm bait and fish in Windurst Woods or Waters. You
will catch Crayfish(6) and Moat Carp(11). You should travel to windurst to
start fishing because the fishing guild is in windurst.
level 6-11
Buy yourself a stronger rod. I recommend a composite or mithran because those
will not break when fishing inside a town. Switch to insect ball bait and fish
for Moat Carp(11) and Gold Carp(56) in windurst woods around the fountain.(Area
with most moat carp in the windurst)
level 11-20
Travel to east ronaflaure with a strong rod, either mithran or composite and a
fly lure to catch cheval salmon(21) and shining trout(37) in the steams.
level 20-30
Travel to Jugner forest and fish in the lake. You have to make a decision which
rod to use. If you use a composite rod, you will get more "Fish too small"
messages, but the rod will not break. If you use the mithran rod, you will get
less "Fish too small" messages, but the rod can break on ashwood logs. What you
need is alot of insect ball bait. The entire carp family is in this lake. The
target fishes will be tricolored carp (27) and gold carp(56).
You must be careful while fishing here because bogy spawns around the lake and
you can potentially fish yup monsters up to level 30+.
level 30-40
Travel to South Gustaberg with a composite rod. You can either use sinking
minnow lure or slice sardine bait to catch ogre eel(35), gold lobster(46), and
zalmung bass(48). You will get more bites with the slice sardine but it is much
more expensive than using the sinking minnow.
level 40-49
Travel to beaucine glaciers to with a composite rod and sakigi rig lure or a
lot of little worm bait. You will catch ice fish(49) in the ponds there.
Getting to this area is very difficult because you have to go through a cave
with high level monsters and also the monsters in the glaciers are aggressive
gigas and tigers. Do not even try to fish in this area with a character under
level 45.
Option 1
level 49-56
Go back to Windurst woods and use your mithran rod with insect ball bait to
catch Gold Carp(56). At this point you might want to think about completing the
Lu Shang's Fishing Rod quest. After this move to option 2.
Option 2
level 49-69
Use a composite rod (or Lu shang's highly recommended) with a minnow lure or
sliced sardine bait in west sarubartha to catch blade fish(70), bastore bream
(70), and blue tail(55). Note if you are using a composite rod you will get
alot of fish too small messages. Thats why you really need lu shang's to make
some decent money.
level 69-74
Use a composite rod with meat ball bait to catch silver shark(74) either on the
ship (bad idea if you can't repair your rod) or in bataglia downs or saurumogue
champaign.
level 74-90
Travel to qufim island with a composite rod and either minnow lure or sliced
cod bait. Here you will catch three-eyed-fish(82) and giant squid(90).
level 90-100
Get on the boat from mhaura to selbina and use a strong rod (either composite
or lu shangs) and meat ball lure to catch titantius(100) and other legendary
fish in the ocean. All fishes that bite on meat ball on the boat can and will
break any rod. That includes lu shangs and composite. You really need to have
high alchemy or high woodworking to repair rods with light crystals
