ok this isn't much of a hack. but if you are into dat file editing, and you get really tired of changing the dat files back after every update! i can cut your time down to seconds. it just takes alot of work to write it up
If you like to have several dat files edited like for me i prefer to have my avatars all big, my icons changed, font changed and windows changed. etc etc. you CAN back up your FFXI info onto a back up harddrive *good idea anyway if you don't wish to download 14000 files when you reinstall*But if you have the Hard drive space.. then copy FFXI folder somewhere else. you can then open up your Notepad
START>>PROGRAMS>>ACCESSORIES>>NOTEPAD.exe
Here is is example of a batchfile which is typed into Notepad. and this line is pretty much the same everytime when you make the batchfile just have to change the locations of where you have the installed FFXI folders.:
(!empty($user->lang['CODE'])) ? $user->lang['CODE'] : ucwords(strtolower(str_replace('_', ' ', 'CODE'))): COPY "E:\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\119\58.DAT" "C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\97\68.dat" /Y ----NEW LINE---- COPY "E:\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\14\79.DAT" "C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\113\68.dat" /Y ----NEW LINE---- ETC, ETC, Rinse and repeat.
-COPY - Means you are copying one file to the other
-E:\ - In this example is my backup of FFXI
-C:\ - Is where you desire to copy to.
-/Y - this means yes you wish to replace a file w/o a prompt to do so.
Then when you are finished save it as something like "FFXIdatrep.BAT"
.BAT at the end is important
now sometimes, depending on if you change alot. it can take a little time to write... but once you have it done it takes 5 seconds or so to replace everything. very very convenient.

THIS IS A RESPONSE TO THE PERSON 2 POST'S BELOW ME!
Since i can't reply for some reason saying i must be premium...
But you want me to submit a compilation? to show that it works? or submit a compilation of dat files that others can just pick out? well in a sense that's a good idea but that's almost impossible because alot of people have their own edited files. but if you wanted me to make an example compilation and you tested it.. sure i could do that. please specify for me My main goal is to updat Mr. Wildrabbit for peeps again, just need the Offsets... i was the one that !@#$%^&* it (by Rolo(me)) to making it smaller and made it transparent. and then lost premium
but anyway write back soon

Yeah, this isn't very commonly known, and as far as I know, its not already on this site... Its not really "premium-worthy" in my opinion, as its not his actual creation, but something he knows how to do. Now if he were to post a folder that has a compilation of a lot of edited .dats and the .batch file to go with them, that would be premium worthy, cuz it would save a lot of time, and it would help a LOT of people, because not everyone knows how to use their computers that well, and it'll be confusing for them even with this as a guide.
Yay for points
BUT, if he posts a folder with a bunch of edited .dats and a file to go with it, then I'll give a "yay" for premium as well.... I suggest you do that... Good luck

This was made by Snake_Eater or found by him, not sure which. But you can use this to make your compilation...
I think you should take like 10 commonly camped zones, and then edit the .dats for those zones, but I guess CAPITALIZING the name of the NM so that it stands out in the crown and makes things easier for everyone, without personalized names.
Suggested NM's:
Hoo Mjuu The Torrent
Mee Deggi The Punisher
Quu Domi The Gallant
Stray Mary (Both)
Leaping Lizzy (Both)
Serket (Cuz I hate it)
Fafnir
Zipacna (All of them)
Despot
Jagged Eared Jack
Spini Spipi (Spelling?)
Those are just some common, everyday NM's that people camp. I'm not going to tell you where they are, you can do that yourself with the list I gave you (Made/found? by Snake_Eater) and then I suggest you compile them into the same list that you use with yours.
But another suggestion, make the backup folder in the "Play Online" folder, that way the majority of the people can easily access it and can easily use this.
Example:
1. Make a folder that has all the .dat's from the NM's I listed.
2. Make the Batch File fore all those .dat's.
3. Put the Batch File into the .dat's folder and put the folder in the "Play Online" folder. (Use the C:/My Computer/Program Files/Play Online/" file route as the default so that no one gets confused, since not everyone will be able ot change it themselves).
4. Tell people how to use a Batch File, because not everyone knows how to do that
~Good luck

Don't do that. GM's easily notice things like NM's or PH's with name changes.. you'll get banned in an instant.

If im not mistaken, that is all client sided, and therefore GMs are unable to detect if the name is changed. Who knows though, maybe im just a damn noob that has no idea what hes talking about.

LOL Vax....... I've been doing that for the last year and a half.... And so far no ban... I'm 99.99999% sure its Client Sided, so in all honesty, the only way I think they could figure you changed your .dat's, is if they scanned your computer, and manually checked the NM's names and things. And I'm also 99.999999% sure that they can't do that, and if they did, I'm sure you could take them to court since its not in the EULA. Am I right Kourath?
Vax, you may be able to get banned though if you start shouting or tell the GM that you edited the .dat's or if you shouted/told the EdITeDNaMe and someone noticed it.... Lolz

Yes.
Ok, look, its really quite simple how graphics work in this game. The server only sends the command for what to display, the client handles everything else. NO sever/client interaction whatsoever with the actual representation of the 3d model.
EX: you have 3 triangles in front of you. I'm in another room and I tell you to move the first triangle forward. You move it forward. Now, i have no way of knowing if you even moved it, or if you moved the right one, or if it is being correctly displayed, ect. Moreover, I cannot find out. This is how graphics work.
Long story short: its client sided. Trust me.
my, I'm starting to sound like a broken record. Ive probably explained this 4+ times.

Nah nah, if you change the NM's name it will show up that way in the chat log, and if a GM looks over the chat log for that zone they will see yours with capitol letters.
edit: If they run a check on (your) chat logs.. which they will if you start claiming it every time and someone reports you for botting or whatnot..

LOL Again.... What part of "They can not read ANYTHING on your computer because its against the law" do you not get here?! Go read the EULA, it gives them absolutely no permission to access any information on your computer. If they did, you could theoretically sue them...

Alright, well I'm just not too sure then as to how they can look back in chat logs and see what was traded/etc. They must have a MASSIVE amount of storage to keep all the zones chatlogged for 2 weeks. (2 weeks is the cutoff probably because thats the most they can retrieve a lost item from).
I'm not too sure, but the guy I was on ventrilo with allot said that the GM told him he got banned for namechanging. Oh well. Maybe he used <t> in /say and it was noted? Eh. I give up. If it doesn't get you banned then go for it, I'll stay safe with my behemoth .dat swaps >:D
