Mining is one of the greatest ways to make gil in my opinion. I prefer to mine in Zeruhn, as there are many other things you can do while you are there.
To get started mining, there are a few things you will need.
· Pickaxes, of course. To get these, go to Boytz’s Knickknacks in the Bastok Mines, and buy a stack or two from him, as they break, and often. They will cost between 220 and 180 gil, each depending on your fame.
· Space. You will need to make room in your inventory for all the ore. Get rid of everything but your weapon, and some field gear if you have it.You can go to jeuno and do the gobbie bag quest, that is the easy way to make more space..
· Fire Crystals. These aren’t really necessary, but you might want to bring 2-3 (stacked, of course). You will use these to make copper ingots, which will save space in your inventory because unlike ore, they stack.
Not that you have everything you need, it’s time to get started! Go to Zeruhn Mines, and follow the left wall until you get to the big open space, and start running around and targeting everything until you see a mining point. When you do, run up to it and go to your items, and select a pickaxe. It’s that simple! There are lots of thing you can get. You can get copper, tin, zinc, iron, silver and even darksteel ore! The darksteel is very rare though, so don’t count on getting any. You can also get pebbles, but just throw those away (or throw them at monsters). I suggest throwing away tin also, but you can keep it if you want. Once you have four copper ores, synthesize them into ingots. Keep mining until your inventory is full, or you run out of pickaxes. Also, please, don’t steal mining points. It’s rude, and just plain mean. How would you like it if someone walked up to a point you were at and just started mining there? If you see someone stealing mining points, send them a tell, as there are many new people who don’t know.
Zeruhn is a great place to farm. All the monsters drop Zeruhn Soot (10k a stack on Remora) and the bats drop wind crystals (4k a stack). The Tunnel worms sometimes drop ore, too. Also, the monsters are really easy for anyone 5+, and not that hard for anyone lower. I usually drop the bat wings, they are a waste of space in my opinion, but you can keep them if you want. Also, there is a repeatable quest given by Gerbaum (F-7 I think) that asks you for three Pinches of Zeruhn Soot.
Field Gear
About Field Gear. For anyone who uses mining as their main source of income, I suggest investing in the gear, as it decreases pickaxe breakage, and helps you get better ore. It’s very expensive though, so if you can’t afford it, wait to get enough gil from mining. There is also another kind of armor called Workers Gear, but this is VERY expensive, so I only recommend it for very, very serious miners. Also, remember the Field Hose do NOT help mining results, as if you look at the description it says it only helps logging and harvesting results.
Well, I hope this guide has helped you start mining (or at least given you some extra gil)
